What do you use now, Fiddle? I'm surprised there isn't a unamimous choice for best grain for cubes by now. I'll be doing my first bulk soon and I keep going back and forth about which grain I'm gonna use.

I recommend millet. Itβs the goat. I use white but it doesnβt really matter. As long as itβs whole and not treated with fungicide ur good. I use wheat and oats too but now mainly millet.

Thanks Fiddle and Screwup. I had it down to millet or oats. Best prep for it? I've seen several.

I go into oat prep pretty thoroughly in my journal. Itβs either in the load cycle tek or b+ documenting failure. Donβt soak. Boil 35-38min. Strain. Dry for 3hrs max spread out w fan. Cycle 2.5hrs. Some will say overkill but I present you with clean spawn and I will every time.

Stipes flash millet is reliable and simple. Usually tho I just go for a thorough wash in brewers bag, boil water, remove from heat, add millet, wait 24hrs. Grains will expand in PC. Load ur jars 1/2 or lower.

Ok thank you for responding so promptly to my badgering. I read stipes and I'll read it again. But yours is interesting, though. Interesting in that you don't soak oats but you soak millet 24hrs, and then from pot straight to jars then pc?

Yeah itβs a different grain it behaves way differently. Oats have thicker outer hulls and require extra steps to hydrate. One of the reasons folks find millet so attractive. Ease of use.

I think a lot of folks lean toward no-pre bc itβs so simple. There can be issues with partial hydration though sometimes, even if your ratios are off a tiny bit. Kind of like making rice stovetop but way harder. I just opt for simple prep.

Best grain can be the cheapest, easiest to get, if you want, cubes will eat anything.
Read Crack's millet prep too, saves time!
I'm a fan of low prep, click the link in my signature if you dare, mwah hah hah!

Interesting read, sounds kinda simple and a bit scary at the same time. I might send all 20 of my T2 plates if they keep going without contam. It's MSS so I'm not trying to isolate. If I do, I can test a couple with no prep to see how it goes, but I'm too scared to do all of them that way on my first bulk!

Can't get much easier, especially with millet or oats. Dry grain in your jar, add water, lid, foil then PC, done. Prep time is in minutes, not counting PC time.
Good luck Hysteria, with 20 plates, you will learn a lot!

Hulled millet can still be whole, right? Sorry if that's obvious. I'm thinking whole == not cracked or otherwise processed.

Thanks, man! I'll definitely be uploading pics when the plates get close so I can get some advice from all you experts. If there's one thing I got firm in my mind from researching here, it's that I wanna make damn sure my technique is as clean as possible prepping the spawn. I still gotta decide on GE method. I might do polyfill just because I don't trust sfd stickers yet since I heard some of them suck.

Whole millet not hulled.
I'm old school and still use Polyfil.
Definitely research and be clean but don't let it stress you out, the mushrooms sense it. π

Whoa ok thanks for helping me avoid that mistake. I don't stress during the process of working with them, for that reason. I try to give good vibes. I mentally relax just prior to working and play relaxing nature sounds, native american wind flute, or even tibetan chanting monks while I'm working with them and I play the same music for them at night before bed haha. Lol yeah, I'm a little soft in the head, like a mushroom.
