Waste of money! LoL Just use a cut off stainless bolt in your jar and put 2 magnets on the opposite sides of a drill chuck. Instant cheap stirring setup.

You could make and try this right now if you have these things

As I said most stainless is non magnetic.

400 series stainless is magnetic (410,420,440)
Because it contains a large amount of ferrite, and thus is susceptible to rust and corrosion.

Higher quality stainless is non magnetic and will not rust.

I used marbles for stirring. Something like 5 marbles to give it some inertia and you're good to go, just hold the jar from the top and stir it with your wrist

All stainless will rust, it's not rust proof. It's STAIN LESS. And tons of things are made outta 400 series. Got a master tool and die worker right in my immediate family.

I’ve been welding in the aerospace in the aerospace industry for 28 years.

300 series stainless steel will not rust for decades,
As they contain for more chromium and nickel.
Edit: in fact I’ve never seen a piece of 316 stainless rust.
I have however seen it corrode due to extreme heat, high acid and high salt environments.

Stuff like 17-4 ph will not rust.

And you are right lots of thing are made using 400series stainless because it’s cheaper with less chromium and nickel

You can just Google it and see for yourself. Sure some will stay good for a long time. But ALL of it will rust given the right conditions so saying that it NEVER will is inaccurate at best.

Plus this has nothing to do with the DIY stirrer DERRAYLD posted. Tons of bolts are 400 series and they'll last a very long time being used this way before they rust.

I got this stir plate and it's been perfectly fine. If you have it on the lowest speed possible, it won't start turning until you turn it up a bit, then turn it back down, but that's the only fault -- and any cheap motorized device might have the same problem. It has more than enough speed to handle a quart jar, I only ever need to turn it up to 30-40%.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GN65TYC

If you search Amazon for "magnetic stir plate" you will find tons them that look just like this, all with different colors, labels, and funny names. I bet they are all the same and if I needed another one, I'd do that and pick the absolute cheapest option.

The cheapest option I see today is this one in grey, it should be $19.42 after applying the $6 coupon.

https://www.amazon.com/HYCC-MX-3K-Laboratory-Magnetic-Aluminium/dp/B09XR3H9Z2

Don't forget your Weewooday stir bars, LOL. It's about a buck each for a 16-pack, cheapest I could find when I looked. Get more than you think you need, stir plates are cool.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08P3J9T43

I have an impulse sealer but I cannot yet recommend it as I have not broken it in. I just picked a cheap one, glanced at the Amazon reviews, and crossed my fingers.

Thank you, I appreciate that.  I ordered that cheap grey one.  Now to look for a sealer.

I think the issue would be with balancing the stirrer. Too much oomph and the stirrer flies away. That's why i'm a bit skeptical of Derrayld's method - my hands shake like shit, and this magnetic stuff... if you move just a little - you get fucked and need to start over

I never said 17-4 isn’t magnetic.
I said it won’t rust.
Not in anyone’s lifetime ever

I didn't say you did say that about 17-4 lol

So yes..we can agree it too rusts! LoL doesn't matter how long it takes its not rust proof. And as amazing as that steel is in the right conditions it can corrode faster. No stainless is rust proof like I originally said.

I'm thinking of getting an instapot for agar.
I don't use the presto for a single 500ml bottle, but rather a 10L PC that goes up to 12-13psi and I just cook it for 40mins.

Anyone use one for doing small agar quantities?

I have an 8qt instant pot. I use it for agar. And soup. What? I'm old, we like soup.

I love soup. :tellmeastory:

Can you use an instapot as a hot water bath to keep agar at temp? I got a sous vide thing for that but it's pissing me off since it doesn't fit any of my pots properly and I already dropped the damn thing once.:mad2:

I use a thermostatic water bath. They’re the best for that.

It's a bit of a crutch, without having steady hands, but these ic extractor pens seem to work well for quick agar transfers. I saw an article from archers mushrooms talking about it originally.

Ive also seen the metal straw kits used, but hopefully I can just practice better Scalpel skills before worrying about more punch tools.

Are those easy to sterilize? I make do with the scalpel and not much else because of my blessedly steady hand, but I always look at tools like that and think about easy of use. It’s good to have assistive tools.

I have one of those for gemstones. I'd be very hesitant to use it on agar. There's too many places for mold and bacteria hide and the prongs on mine would disintegrate after a few torches.

Does anyone have advice on a decent quality impulse sealer and mixing plate?  For the impulse sealer do I just go with the larger width incase I use bigger bags in the future?  I would like to buy both in the next couple of days and have just been shopping around.

AIE 5mm sealers work great for mushroom bags.

cant go wrong with that

i fkn love mine is really a game changer.
