Just wanted to share my experience^^ 10 are not enough if you like to give away mush to others ;-) But for your use solely, 10 should suffice ;-)

Giving this thread a slight bump because it deserves it. Also to say that I'm just waiting on that one guy, stuck in 2003, who will come along and claim that he can dry his big harvest of fruits at 120 F for 6 hours and they'll be truly cracker dry. There's always one.

Iβve always put all my fruits in front of my grand fathers old manual powered fan for 30 minutes and never had any issues this tek seems like over kill.

Awesome TEK! Thanks for the clarification on temperature and duration
Bought a dehydrator after some mush rotted away and definitely wouldn't do it without anymore..

BEST post I have come across yet since signing up!!
I'm in tears but it is also some great info!
Only thing I'll add is that I will flood the mason jar with Bloxygen when I pull them off the trays tonight or tomorrow for long term storage. Do I need to? Maybe not but I already have it so why not.

If you get moisture indicator color changing desiccant packets, you can toss them on top near the end of the dry time. Keep the dehydrator running until the packet color indicates dry, then you shrooms will be dry too.

That doesnβt make any senseβ¦all that indicates is that the packets have dehydrated. Most of those depending on temperature states like 30mins-2 hours to dry them.
If you just mean because you want to kill two birds one stone then sure but that IMO does not indicate what you said.

When you run the dehydrator, the water evaporates up. If you have the desiccant on top, any moisture that leaves the mushrooms will have to go through the desiccant on it's way out. Packet gains moisture and losses it again. Works for me so far

Yeah I wouldnt trust that. Put some at the beginning of your drying cycle and then Iβd have a little more trust in that. Mine also blows horizontal as itβs a cosori.

Iβve had mixed result trying to dry out desiccant packs in my dehydrator. I like the idea, but the indicators donβt always change even after many hours. Most will instruct to bake at higher temps than my dehydrator is capable of, so maybe thatβs the thing.

I just throw 'em fresh from the pack. I check the color to make sure they aren't pre-fucked. I've yet to pre-bake (other than myself).

Bumpety McMotherfuckin bump.
This deserves a sticky.
If you're hung up on waste and energy use, then look at every other aspect of your lifestyle. Odds are good that buying and running a dehydrator is far behind a thousand other things in terms of contributions to your environmental footprint.
If you're still hung up on waste and energy use, go buy a dehydrator at goodwill and hook it up to a bank of old car batteries linked up to solar panels or a windmill or a biodiesel generator. Or just accept the fact that a little plastic appliance that runs a small fan and heating element is probably the most sustainable purchase you could make this year, as it can be used to preserve any number of foodstuffs with minimal energy use.
One thing I don't personally get into is the silicagel packets. I just use glass jars for storage, and stuff them as full as I possibly can (no interest in "bag appeal"). I also heat them on the base of the dehydrator before filling, after filling followed by a little burp, or any time I'm going to open them. In my personal tinfoil hat headcanon, silicagel is designed to capture moisture, maaaan, and I'm trying to get it all OUT. Seriously, though, it is typically used in products with a moisture content higher than 0%, which is our theoretical goal.
That said, I probably would use them if I had jars of fruit I was constantly dipping into for consumption (most of my stuff just gets ground up and mixed into chocolate). I would definitely be recharging them frequently in that case.
-------------------- Beware of advice- even this.

Have a nice dehydrator full of mush. Going on 23-hours now at 165F. Going to let it go an extra few hours *past 24*...because why not? Might as well run it until bed.

Just adding a bit of sciency love for this post. As a noob I was worried about too much heat, but I shouldn't have been. 165f is about 74c on the graph.
