You don't need rooting hormones.

As a kid I sort of made my own rooting hormone by diluting 2,4-D weed killer until it was usable for the purpose. At that time rooting hormones weren't sold in my country for the consumers. Did some tests and it worked okay. Managed to root for example Betula...

I agree, I've always just used water and most species of plants, including cannabis, respond well.

You may need a help with some species. But weed usually roots very well just in plain water. It only takes a bit more of patience.

I'm experimenting with mats of aquarium plants, which I hope will make 02, rooting and branching hormones, as a well as fixing nitrogen. https://www.agrifarming.in/azolla-benefits-uses-role-importance-in-rice-production
I'm going to recover what appears to be 'pond meal' floating in the pool, every summer. Just to see whether it spreads in a vivarium.
Also, I am finding that warmth makes a significant difference, depending on whether a plant is heat or cold-dormant.
"Beneficial trichodermas" is common contam, that I found growing in old pomegranate husks. https://vegetalbioplant.com/blog/en/growth-fhase/natural-rooting-micorrhizes-and-trichoderma/

I use a shoe box container like what you grow shrooms with, and I cut 8 holes in the lid. I bought a cheap fish tank air pump, air line, and an air stone. The airstone sits in the water and makes a shitload of bubbles. I typically get roots in 5 to 7 days max. now.
Regular glass of water I have to wait usually 3 weeks.

I think you can Ferment Tryptophan with Bakers yeast to geht tryptophol, and then Ferment it with mother of vinegar (acedic acid bacteria) to obtain crude IAA.

Get an aloe plant, they are easy to care for and the gel can be used for cloning as well as burns.
Another option would be willow, but not everyone has room for a tree.
Final suggestion is to use a little bit of bleach in the cloning water. I clone in plugs, and usually add about 3 drops of bleach to each quart of water I soak the plugs in.

Final suggestion... Yeah, how to prevent rotting and molding?
Many root without extra hormones, but easily rot if out of their best season. And when they do start to rot it's too late to do anything..
Willow water -> auxins + nutrients etc. that may feed bacteria too Aloe -> hormones maybe (gibberellins) + nutrients? Algae -> auxins, some natural products available. Neudofix was the only rooting product available back then.. Honey -> antibiotic + sugars... Cinnamon -> antibacterial + nutrients?
And then there is bunch of youtube vids of using aloe, bananas, potatoes, onions and whatever else... Onions contain sulphur but lots of sugars too..
(I just put some citrus leaves to root using 10 year old Neudofix powder... the leaves were a bit dry, so they might fail..)
