I think it would make more sense to compare cakes to grain....since you can use either cakes or grain to spawn bulk(though grain is better for many reasons) so really it should be between cakes and grain...but they are both the same really...the only chance of contams is in the innoculation...well provided you have a working filter....the only thing I can think of is that most ppl use a dry verm layer with cakes and since you have to penetrate that with your syringe it comes in contact with the substrate....this dosen't happen with grain....also now that I think about it....you only need 1 innoculation point with grain since you can shake it....with cakes you need 4 or else you'll be waiting forever..so I'd say grain but thats not the poll

You can't really compare the two this simply.

PF will contaminate at the drop of a hat, if you happen to get something in the jar that shouldn't be in the jar. On the other hand, once it's in the jar, so long as you don't do something Really Stupid, contams aren't going to get in.

Bulk lets you be a lot sloppier when you're making it -- pasteurized bulk is more contam-resistant than PF, but it also gives contams a greater chance to take hold. because it's frequently exposed to open air once you've got it all set up.

By all means, if you want the most trouble-free time of growing, go with PF tek or growbags.
