Casing Substrate 50/50+ calcium carbonate???
    #2831157 - 06/26/04 05:07 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

After a week of searching for vermiculite and coco coir in my city and having found only ignorant answers from the store employees I have decided to use the Peat Moss and Vermiculite 50/50 tek (because initially I had some verm, enough for one casing when I have two jars = 2 casings)... Now, I know the pH of the substrate has to be regulated with some calcium carbonate, which in all the teks is represented in the form of crushed oyster shells and lime. Now my question is, Why need these 2 materials when both have the same ingredient with the same function?
Do I also need sand if I still have bot enough sand?
And for the last, if I can find pure calcium carbonate in a drug store in the form of pellets... what is the ratio I shall use in relation to the peat and verm? I mean this because obviously pure Calcium B will need less quantity than crushed oyster shell or lime...
Thanks in advance-.

In the FAQ it is said that lime acts as an inmediate PH buffering agent while crushed oyster shell acts as a longtime PH buffering agent... then, if I use crushed CACO3 pellets will I need to add more to the casing mixture after the first couple of flashes or something?
Can anybody tell me if the ratio of limestone and crushed oyster shell can be replaced by pure CACO3 (say, 10% lime and 15% oyster shell making 25% CACO3) or it has to be a completely new ratio?
