Outdoor disaster!!
    #2830702 - 06/26/04 02:07 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

nooooooo! Yesterday I planted an outdoor patch with some left over semi-colonized substrate I had. Now I checked it this morning just for shits and giggles and it seriously looked like someone had shoved a small explosive down in my bed and set it off. All it was was the hole I'd dug (empty) with substrate and WBS scattered. It looked like something had gotten into it? I didn't have access to poo or straw so I made my bed as follows: 6" hole, 1 layer of substrate, 1 layer of WBS (soaked), another layer of substrate, and yet another layer of WBS, then a small amount of substrate (all i had left) and a WBS/soil mix. I think the WBS may have been a bad idea (birds maybe?), it also looks like i have really thick (almost too think to be mycelium)root like things (?) growing in my patch. Maybe roots of some kind. Any suggestions about what's gotten into it or maybe a way I could still save this patch?

Could've been a gopher or some other small rodent, it looks like that when they dig into mulch and what not to burrow. That's a risk you take growing outside though. Bummer man, better luck next time.

Probably a squirrel or racoon. You definitely shouldn't've had WBS in the top layer.

Same thing happened to my morel patch I made earlier this year, although my dog was the culprit. She loves morels as much as I do, and I think she smelled them. If there was ever a time I would have beat my dog, it was when I saw the crater. I can't blame her though...

Use hardware cloth to cover from animals. I make a frame from 2x12s 3x3 foot square. I cover the bottom with hardware cloth, and made a hinged lid using 2x4s and more hardware cloth. I did not do this for my morels, as I wanted them to spread, not being locked in the raised bed.

I think the best thing to do would be to cover the plot for a week or two, either with hardware cloth as someone mentioned, or just with a plywood plank or something similar. You just wanna keep critters out until stuff gets really going, after which the critters probably won't be interested any more.
