General internet security questions
    #28306758 - 05/04/23 05:43 PM (8 months, 20 days ago)

Hi guys, I know very little about internet security and anonymity.  I have a VPN, and I understand the purpose behind that, but I still don't even know how to completely erase histories and whatnot on my Mac. I guess my question is, if someone were to go through my computer, what measures would I need in place to keep my browsing history, accounts, EVERYTHING hidden and private?

I just had to disconnect my VPN to post this, the website wouldn't allow me??

Full drive encryption is the best way to keep that stuff private.    Set a password screensaver lock that kicks in after a couple minutes of inactivity, use less time for more security.  Become familiar with the keyboard shortcut to lock your screen quickly - on windows it's windows-L.    Lock your screen when you leave your keyboard - especially if someone is banging on the door or kicks it down!  All the encryption in the world won't matter if your screen is unlocked.

On a mac, the easiest way to do full drive encryption is via Filevault.

Remember that if you forget your password, all your data is gone.    You should definitely back up the data that is important, and you probably don't need to back up your web browser history so you may not need encryption on the backup.

Short passwords can be cracked with a dictionary attack so your password should not be a dictionary word and should include uppercase, lowercase and punctuation.
