Moral Perfection - A Pipe Dream
    #28305118 - 05/03/23 03:34 PM (8 months, 21 days ago)

More and more as I go through this dream-like life, the tragedy, the joy, the malevolence, the successes and all inbetween, the most pernicious idea that seems to take people down the most, i observe, is this idea that a mortal man can adhere to a standard of perfection, in morality or in anything really. It seems quite ridiculous that although i try and strive towards a high moral standard for myself, for the purpose of being able to live with myself due to my conscience, or worse: due to the moral structure imposed upon me by society or even reality itself, that I can never achieve perfection, like a donkey with a carrot dangled over my head continually. An Impossible perfection is a probable hellscape.

I fall and I stumble on many roadblocks and have to live with the subsequent regretful fallout. I think however that happiness and contentment is possible despite our imperfections. And I'm not trying to say that we should not strive, I'm just trying to say I think when it comes to morality we should not beat ourselves up like Catholics when we err by our own standards. I think Jordan peterson said once that we should only beat ourselves up enough to learn the lesson then stop, but perhaps thats even too much IMO given the limited time we have on this planet. Some others try to say that a breech in morality is irreparable. The purveyors of black and white morality who attempt to block us in with no thought given to mercy or forgiveness. I say don't listen to a word of it as they are the ivory tower preachers of death in the moral sense who want you to remain in a state of perpetual anxiety and guilt.

I guess my main point is from this ramble, is that hey, we are all human. Don't give yourself a hard time unless you decide to stop learning. If you learn from your mistakes you're still a good egg. Amen.

A lot of the time I think of people as electrons. The misguided fools who try to make everything either black or white, they're often incentivised by "leaders" of "power structures" to keep people miserable because miserable people are easier to control, but really, who has more power in your life, the president or your favorite grandma figure?

I think we're going to move away from this as labor is increasingly automated.

I don't know about you, but when someone keeps yelling at me when talking would suffice, I tend to start tuning them out rather quickly.

you gotta be kidding

My take is that the "learn from your mistakes" paradigm is a cop out.
The only thing that might help is to pay attention better more consistently,
and that you learn from practice, not from the mistakes themselves.
Nobody seems to learn from history.
The mistakes, on the other hand, are terrific entertainment, especially if they resolve as pratfalls.
otherwise, embarrassment, or, tragedies.

The point, like it or not, is to coerce your opponents, the higher courts, into making the same mistakes so that they can not be so high handed in their judgements...

Now yous a playa.

Learning from others mistakes is more preferable to making them yourself. Awareness generally of our own flaws and problems so as not to make mistakes where we have flaws in our character is cruicial I think. You defintely learn *the hard way* from mistakes, but its always better to not make them in the first place.

But if mistakes are inevitable, by whatever instrument of means, then the objective, like your second contribution in this thread, is to mitigate karma

maybe in learning our limitations, which truly is real learning, and not any mistake at all.

as we have to learn the abilities and limits of our bodies,
and learn them all over again as we grow,
and then learn them all over again as we age and in some ways shrink.
