Spawn bag stall
    #28302098 - 05/01/23 11:00 AM (1 year, 8 months ago)

Hi there- I am a noob working my one and only monotub right now. I do have a leftover spawn bag that is kind of colonized. Right now there is a chunk of mycelium that is pinning. This bag is from January. I think the rye berries have dried up a bit and that’s why colonization ( no obvious contamination) has stalled. The pins are the same size for a week. Do you think it is possible to rehydrate the berries through the injection port? I think if I open the bag, given the uneven colonization, that the bad will be toast due to contamination. Any thoughts on this or just pick my few pins and ditch it in the yard?

pictures are worth a thousand words on here! if you can post a pic most of us can tell you immediately if it's contams. usually early pinning is a sign of bacteria. bacteria can also be hard for new growers to spot, i'd be rich if i had a dollar for every bag that someone thought was clean just because it was white. could possibly have dried but i'm guessing you went spore syringe to bag, which is notorious for failure. probably best to just ditch it in the yard either way

if you have spore syringe left, use it on some PF cakes & go from there. or get a PC & learn agar if you feel like you'd like to do this long term, a pressure cooker is easily the best investment you can make in this hobby if you wanna graduate from PF

Sounds more likely that you injected a grain bag with a spore syringe which caused contamination and bad colonization and early pinning would definitely not try to rehydrate the rye. Would love to see a picture.

If it has been going since January,  probably a lost cause at this point. I would open it up, remove everything uncolonized, and just try to get a few decent shrooms.

What to do?!?
I just looked at my stallled spawn bags- been sitting in a corner. The rye berries have definitely dried out quite a bit and the mycelium is at  around 30%( it has recede). There are pins though! What should I do?
This is not a spawn to bulk scenario I don’t think since they are pinning.
Do I dump the loose grains and put the cake in a tray or leave it in the bag, but give the pins some room?
Should I add water?
My other spawn bag is pinning too,  but there is possible trich on the top….at least I thought it was two days ago. Under bright light it looks blue, but the mycelium looks very solid and puffy( not cobweb) is this that overgrowth scenario?
Sort of a wierd scenario- neither light nor shade- long stalling bag decides to pin. I was not going to spawn to bulk because my one monotub triched out and this long stall probably stalled due to some contams. I don’t see or smell evidence in this one bag though.
Please advise!

Is this dark stuff trich? I am not sure. Don’t want to open the bag and trich out my area even more than my monotub fail did.

Alright, I'm putting a disclaimer on this one.

I think this bag is contaminated to all hell and I wouldn't do anything except toss this bag. I don't know if that bag is just full of bacteria, or if there is something nastier in that that would sporulate and either make you sick or spread into your house. I see two pictures of what looks like bruising, but I'm not 100% from those pictures. If it is trich, you're just gonna be spreading spores around. There's a bunch of other molds out there too. I don't endorse the following, but you seem adamant and kept it for a month after I said I would toss it.

If you are desperate and you are sure it is pinning this is what I would do

As stated previously, remove all uncolonized material. If you have uncolonized grains exposed to open air, you are begging for them to be taken over by contamination.

Try your best not to break up or disturb the colonized parts as best as possible.

Try to fruit it in some bags like this

If you think it looks dry, mist it until it is slightly glistening or it has small beads of water on the mycelium

Personally, I think you should just cut your losses and start some PF tek

I appreciate the candid and circumspect response.
Actually, this bag is something I have not posted about. It is a sawdust mix with a core of rye berry. A vendor provided them gratis when a rye berry spawn bag ripped. I had extra spore solution in my syringe so I inoculated them. I did not expect growth due to the sawdust. For a long time they showed zero signs. They did eventually slowly colonize so I broke them up and this is the result- pretty much full colonization. The blotches don’t smear on the bag like trich ( swab test). Unlike trich these dark patches have not really spread as it quickly did in my monotub and they feel solid. I am wondering if it is overlay and bruising. It really kind of looks blue under bright light.
No pooling liquid or obvious zones in the substrate either.
As to the two rye berry bags, no obvious contamination. Mycelia look uniform and there are no wet spots, funky colors or odors. I will try removing grains with nothing on them.

Well I tried isolating the colonized substrate. I harvested the pins upon opening the bag and got a couple of g’s dry. However, no further pinning and no contams either. I think it is drying out now the bag has opened. There are chunks of berries knit together by mycelium.
So…I am unsure how to proceed:
1) should I dunk the chunks and try and fruit?
I did take some of them outside and put them in Black Kow and watered- no activity.
Should I try and spawn to bulk again? I did this with cow manure inside of ziplocks- got lots of cobweb. One bag might make it. So it seems that approach is not great.
2) dunk and case in a tray?
3) dunk and keep in the bag sealed up?
What would you do?
