Hey i was wondering what the cheapest subtrate is? I thought it was corn but im looking toward millet now. How much do you guys pay per pound for your medium of choice?

I like bird seed but having to go to the pet store all the time buying multiple bags gets annoying, and raises questions.. So where is a good place to look for bulk grains aswell?

hay bale $3-5 too, and $2 for 40lbs of "long island composted manure" Bulk is great and cheap! For spawn I get 40lb bags of WBS (millit based) for $8 from home depot so thats .20 cents a pound and no questions asked. If you need alot of spawn just have you and your friend buy a bag or two from seperate cashiers, one get the rubbermaid tubs and humidification hoses, and the other get the lights, wires, and timers.

Whole Corn is by far the cheapest that I have found.I get a 50 pound sack for $4.00 and I have found that it works great VVVV

you can get 50lb bags of millet round here for $20 canadian...poo is free can get ph adjusted peat for $20 for a HUGE ass bag not sure of the actual weight but I can barely carry it on my own...mushroom growing is one of the cheapest things ever if your in the right area...if I were selling the profit margin would be HUGE

EDIT: can also get huge bags of verm in bulk in my area for like $12(Not sure of the weight but they are huge bags trust me)....the great thing is not only is this stuff cheap as shit but its all regular everyday products that are not watched in the slighest

Cracked corn works great! It colonizes very fast and is quite easy to prepare. Just simmer it until it gets a kinda slimy looking,dump it into a strainer,rinse and rinse with cold water and let it drain for about 30min. Add a little gypsum to help shakeablility and you are ready to go.
