![]() Never used to be able to put my finger on it. But growing up, I started to get the exact same feelings from certain Black Metal, as I would from deeply immersing myself in nature. It only got stronger over the years. Sometimes I wonder if it's what all the creators of this type of stuff feel too. To that end: does anyone else feel this way? Or perhaps you have a relationship with a certain genre of music that uncannily evokes a certain place? (I don't mean memory association, taking you back to your youth and the likes) Cheers! -------------------- 🌬️ 🌻 ➞➞➞ ❮❮❮❮ 🌈 ❹⑤⓿ 🌬️ 🌻 ➞➞➞ ❮❮❮❮ 🌈 ❹⑤⓿ 🌬️ 🌻 ➞➞➞ ❮❮❮❮ 🌈 ❹⑤⓿

I dedicate this cup of coffee to sitting here thinking about your post. I don’t know what to say yet, I have nothing and everything to say at the same time. Part of it is, I’m listening to the music you posted right now. I was hoping you could talk more about the feeling you describe about being immersed in nature. Do you mean the same feeling you get while hiking or camping? A feeling like when your listening to the rhythms of nature, the birds, the tide etc? I will say this, this exact style of music didn’t exist for me, when I was a kid I had a record player and a Walkman. Good times! Fuck I gotta go, be back later. Take care brother Edited by Hertz (04/27/23 07:52 AM)

For me now, music and nature are one and the same, because nature is happening right now, whether I’m paying attention or not. When I’m immersed in music it’s happening right now too. Nature is music, that’s how I feel anyway. There is no particular genre that does this for me, depends on the day. I’m not talking about being nostalgic like you mentioned, time and place for that, I’m talking about music bringing me into a present state, which is always close to nature. Quote: Nice one, cheers! Hope there was something in there you could enjoy ![]() Quote: Absolutely- to all of the above. Not only the sounds, but the overall sense of being there- it evolves beyond all sensory inputs at that point. I find quality BM of this kind entrances me in the same way to being out in nature, leading to a focusing & calming of the mind to take place. The simple answer that sprung to mind: it's freedom ![]() Quote: I bet it must be a trip to have seen the advancement of music listening habits AND tech over the years! Personally I appreciate growing up in the era of mp3 players/the internet- it really allowed for a lot of experimentation(with its own problems too, of course). Quote: Dang. ![]() Quote: ![]() Nice response! Yeah I feel you there, interesting how you mention music bringing you into the present because I reckon that's the crux of what I was getting at here. Do you have an opinion as to why music is so able to bring you into the present moment? I feel like it allows for the chemical changes to catch up with the mental ones or something along those lines & about immersion in something outside of your story. Looking at the feeling now that I have a steady meditation habit, I do think it's ultimately down to it being a meditative activity that leads to something like a state of absorbtion. Except in this case the practise is Black Metal in the woods as opposed to breath focus on the cushion ![]() Quote: Likewise dude ![]() I'll leave you with a little tale. A few friends and I camp at an awesome cave in the woods every year- so last year we're shrooming and whatnot. The night has wound down largely, one guy is in his tent while me and the other are gazing into the 'infinite visuals generator' that is a campfire, still tripping a really reasonable amount. Playlist has run out and the one meant for the next morning comes on, bit heavier stuff. "Seven Apparitions of Suffering" by Abduction starts. I can see homie is taking in the grim vibes. He's raking hard among the white hot glowing coals with an expression I wasn't quite certain of on his face, hunched over like 'the thinker'-illuminated pulsing orange afront the silhouetted backdrop of twisting, drooping larch trees ![]() No sooner had it broken into that mighty, spacious part I linked to (about 0:54 in) he ceases his coal-aerating duty. He looks up like the guy and exclaimed 6 words that made my night:"BRO. I get Black Metal now!" ![]()

Quote: BM seems to have long songs which in my opinion could help lead one into a trance like state, short songs don’t do this as much, I guess putting it on repeat could work lol Yes! Freedom resonates strongly with me, it does feel like that doesn’t it! I feel you there. Quote: I have a daughter approaching adulthood, I had her when I was young (I ain’t that old yet). The differences between now and when I grew up are amazing, If I had a smart phone when I was a teenager... I cant imagine what I would have gotten into lol. Younger people today are awesome, they consistently do things that make me wonder at the way their brains work. My daughter is a talented little BEAST - sigh Music has and is evolving quickly for sure. Back in the day I had to hunt for music, take what I could get, learn about stuff through friends etc. It was kinda like hunting mushrooms. Now, same thing lol I just have to hunt through endless content to find stuff. A different kind of hunt I guess. Anyone older knows what I’m talking about. Albums had a sacredness to them and it took time to build a collection! Something else you brought up in your first post, the idea that musicians that play black metal might feel this same connection. I can’t speak for anyone, but I would think a lot of times yes. I have played with and been around artist/musicians for a while now and it goes back to what I said in my other post about being present with it. Playing with other people can be a “spiritual” experience. It transcends what we think we know IMHO. Music has a dark side too though. Some people are super talented, but they are angry and have a shitty outlook and destroy themselves and damage others around them. And certainly didn’t seem to give a shit about nature lol. But when they play, watch out. Idk if that makes sense, might have to edit later. IMHO Another part of it is (this is true for many here on the shroomery probably). I think you feel the connection so deeply because you ARE a musician/artist. Hone your craft and let that shit out brother! The world needs you and others here! NEEDS YOU! This applies to all the arts IMO not just music, fuck living is an art. So to me, all of what your talking about is because you and others here have something special inside you. My non artist friends seem to take it or leave it. Artists can be such a pain in the ass though lol. I’m only talking like this because music is so near and dear to me, and has been a big part of my life, I don’t think I know all about music, I only have my experiences and my opinion. Loved your story btw, it totally reminds me of some times I had with friends where it is like “dude I fucking get it man!” Lol, well written too! Keep posting some black metal from time to time, so we can listen, if you please. I’m still wrapping my tiny brain around it. let me say this, to me a good drummer is one who can sit in the fucking POCKET! Bro nothing better! Whether it’s single or double kick. You know it’s a good drummer when the bouncers and security are nodding their heads. That said I have an affinity towards a single kick, (it’s more like a heartbeat to me) The freakin dogs are barking their asses of right now lol. I do have more thoughts, but for now I’ll end it here. Sorry if I went off topic too much. If this is tldr sorry not sorry will edit later, I’m sure I’ve fucked something up along the way. I do hear what your saying about black metal though, post some more so I can listen take care man!

Quote: That's definitely a part of it I reckon, the same way a good concept album pulls you deeper into its world with each song. IMO the best albums of that sort feel like living one long-ass song.Quote: ![]() Quote: That was nice to read, Hertz. Young people today seem to be up against a lot, as any generation is. I struggle to relate to many of my peers IRL for the reason you highlighted- they consitantly do things that make me wonder at the way their brains work ![]() The smartphone thing however leads me onto something 'important'... I've definitely struggled with (the baked in) technology addiction on and off, my whole adolescent-adult life. Only noticed it in the last 4 years and started to get a handle on it, fully eschewed all traditional social media (only to end up here eventually haha)uninstalled all the messaging apps because I'd become obsessed with making sure I was being percieved a certain way, all that stuff was slowly eroding what little agency I'd actually excersise in my life. Don't even get me started on dopamine traps and porn-addiction etc ![]() I still see its manifestation wearing various masks from time to time, I TRY to stay aware. A bit off topic there but just be aware of how insidious the manifestation of these technologies and their habitual use can be, most people I know who have it worse than I do ATM present themselves as being completely unaware of the strings on their arms... Like the adapted version of that old quote: "Technology is a great servant, but a bad master." Quote: I'm under 30, I grew up with a VCR still, no internet till I was 10, no smartphone till 14 and so on. First mp3 player I got looked like a pregnancy test and could hold as many songs as one ![]() As well as the music channels of UK like Scuzz and KERRANG, I enjoyed the stuff you mentioned there, hunting for music in shops (there was a basement place in a city near me called Beatdown Records and they had a fuckin insane collection of hard to find Metal, among every other genre. So sick.) slowly building a collection since few of my peers liked much of the same music. You get that sacred disc and pore over the cover booklet, every level of the cover, it's symbolism, how it relates to the album, awesome. Fun comparison to hunting mushrooms you gotta identify the habitat (EG: Beatdown), some characteristic features ("Hmm, John Dyer Baizely wouldn't have done artwork for a SHIT album, should myabe check it out!") etc![]() Nowadays there is a level of saturation I never dreamed of across the board, there have always been the coat-tail riders who will switch their sound depending on what's hot, but seems in Art 2023 style there are a lot of ways to get around having no original ideas or vision and negligible dedication to your craft. Of course the opposite is also true, there's insanely good shit out there! Quote: Playing with the right people, to me, IS a spiritual experience. It's no coincidence I felt compelled to dive deep into developing a spiritual practise after I stopped playing with the last band I was in. That ravenous, inner void was back. With a vengance That level of prescence required to lock in with your fellow bandmates is a surefire way to a transcendental state, true emotional catharsis as the tubes cook Quote: It does make sense man. I was that guy (asides from the nature part, I also don't want to claim myself as super talented so replace that with relentless creativity), he still lives in here and I've been working hard since lockdown to make the music come from someone else. Someone who isn't creating it "against" something, someone who isn't doing it for praise or for some percieved reward for being 'the music guy'. Quote: ![]() Thanks Hertz. My last failure in trying to integrate myself into the working world of music after the fact I realised how this could come across)took a bigger toll on me than I'd have expected and really zapped my enthusiasm toward playing instruments for a while. It wasn't the right place or time but I pushed too hard & eventually pushed myself out of the situation without the self awareness to see what I was doing. Made a total fucking clown of myself and it was shit and dark for a long while ![]() Ended up in a good way though so I appreciate what went down. In the honing stage again as of the last few years, and enjoying it more the more time goes on, the world doesn't need anymore shitty/fake art, or as it is known now "Content". When the time is right, I trust I will make my true art. And if it's meant to be shared, it will be. Quote: Birds of a feather on that one, dude ![]() Quote: Haha, thanks man. That moment where you and a homie are just nodding at each other like maniacs over some sweet jams thats love.Quote: I shall! I'll look out some good naturey stuff as it's my jam Yeah you're spot on about the pocket- youtube "Louis Cole" and lemme know what you think! Also I get where you're coming from with that single kick affinity but I'm a sucker for machine-gun double kick! Quote: You're fine RE off topic/ TLDR dude- we're here to chat, not present a thesis on the merits of nature and Black Metal! Take care too, I appreciate your input a lot. ![]() Not naturey, but I'll leave you with a cover of the Black Flag classic 'My War' Edited by Lithop (04/30/23 02:26 PM)

This past little road trip has left me speechless, but I will try. Another human, this is all I can say right now. This beautiful person brought everything I ever thought about music, the forms, my notions, and music itself, he brought music into a form. And with a chuckle and a wink, he took my notions, crumbled the very form of music before my eyes, and scattered it to the wind. I’m still looking for the pieces, I can still see him and hear him though, fucking legend.A deep thank you for the play list, it has meaning my friend. After I’m done tripping I hope to put some things into words, seems silly to try sometimes

Quote: You make a lot of good observations here. The dopamine trap is real for sure. The fact that you are aware of these things is wonderful. I feel for younger people, my daughter included. I’ve never seen so many depressed young people. Up and down, up and down. Of course technology has its awesome side, but I do feel you. I barely touch social media anymore, it’s good to stay in touch with a few people, but the whole thing got old to me a while ago. I haven’t logged in to most of my social media accounts in six years lol, yeah dude Quote: I’m over 40 Barely but still, surprised I made it this far. Let’s give it up for VCR’s!! Remember those things when they’d eat your tapes lol. Yeah man I remember hunting records, the excitement on the way home, ever buy a record you hated and were like god damn it. That only happed a few times, I can usually appreciate something about an album even if is not my thing. It’s how we learn I guess, just because something is unfamiliar doesn’t mean to write it off. Feel me or am I rambling nonsense?Yes dude, the fucking saturation and short ass attention spans of, not all not all not all, but most, is too much for me a lot of times. Talking about music here. I have a hard time finding new things. I can get down and groove to all kinds of shit, but I also need substance and well, substance be lacking brother. However there are fucking incredible musicians/groups hidden on the fringes now more than ever, tough to find ‘em sometimes but they are there. I agree, there’s insanely good shit out there ![]() Quote: Couldn’t have said it better my self, amazing ![]() Quote: Yeah it’s rough out there, sorry to hear that playing music with other people nearly zapped your soul. It is tough for sure. I got lucky I suppose, and played with people I truly love, and we just cared about making music! I didn’t realize until later how blessed I was. Finding the right people I think is more rare than I used to think. As you said, you learned something from your experience, even though it was so taxing for you. My man there is plenty of time left to get involved in something special with other people. I think you’ll find it. You got something special brewing in you! Or even if you do mostly solo work, something good will come up and hopefully you will share with the world ![]() I still need to make a post about the playlist you made, there is some cool shit in there. I enjoyed it very much. Got some shit to talk about I almost forgot, are you saying you feel closest to nature while listening to BM? Can you achieve the same thing with other styles? Don’t think I did but sorry if I asked that before. Because I hear you and I feel you, but I still feel like music itself is a part of nature and manifest in many styles of music. When I’m listening to the right thing at the right time, bliss and I do get the feeling of freedom and closeness to nature ![]() I appreciate your openness, creativity and vibe brother, best wishes ![]() ![]() I think I’m going to drink a beer right now

Quote: Agree with that Quote: You must be doing something right ![]() Sucked when a tape would get munched up or someone taped over your stuff with something shit, but there was something about the whole package- tracking lines, the audio degradation and hardware of it all that is so sick still ![]() And nah I feel you on the not finding the perfect record thing and agree that it does teach something about looking a bit beyond the surface to find something you like ![]() Quote: Yeah, the attention span thing can be savage :slowmo: but as you say, it ain't everyone/everything. That's important to acknowledge. I used to use a site called "audiomap . tuneglue . net" to find new music but it shut years back. I still find good use of spotify etc to find related artists and radio stations but how much of it is my own searching VS algorithmic stuff that's just waiting to suggest anyway... Quote: It's all good bro, I'll never stop with this stuff but altering my view of what I actually expect from music in life done me good overall. It's more when the interpersonal stuff gets so wrapped up with everyones musical aspirations and hopes that it gets muddier and muddier. Finding the right people does seem quite rare, the difference between a BAND and a few people playing together IMO. Quote: Exactly! All the time in the world dude, but another facet of media-portrayal added a rushy aspect to it all that I didn't see the ridiculousness of until too late in this case. That was a cool thing to say man, thanks I appreciate it. ![]() Quote: I'm very glad you enjoyed it dude! ![]() Quote: Not so much that, as the feelings are almost inserperable. IE: I get the same internal stuff going on out in the woods walking as I do when listening to good 'naturey' Black Metal. I can achieve the same thing with other styles, certain HipHop and Synthwave for example give me city-vibes and I reach the same internal state listening to these as BEING in the city... I hope it makes sense ![]() If you could elaborate on music itself being a part of nature I'd be interested to hear it, but I feel I roughly get what you're saying here. The right thing at the right time can be SO STRONG, love it when music and life align in cool ways ![]() Quote: Right back atchya, dude!
