No shake. They're too close to done. I don't even always shake, not sure it's needed, especially if noced with LC. They don't get a shake when growing in cow shit and I've seen many large shrooms growing in cow shit in Texas a long time ago.

I haven't kept databases and made pie charts, but my general feeling is it doesn't speed up my jars, since it has to consolidate after shake.

I'm sure someone here will disagree, but is that one of those old things that is still around because of inertia?

I’d shake those jars.  It’s a good way to find out if your spawn is good.  I guarantee these jars wouldn’t be done 4-6 days later unless I shook them (only the very outside grains are colonized at that point and that’s using 5ml of LC)

Same jars 4 days later after a shake

Same.

It'll take ages for those spots to colonize even if the spawn is healthy. He should've shaken like a week ago and it would've been done by now though.

If I disagree with fahtster, I'd go with fahtster.

I let jars go a week after they look done. Started doing that because someone suggested it with PE, but I do it with non-PE too.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I'll go for the scientific approach and shake the three least colonized jars, and see if they finish up before the most colonized jars (which only have very small spots left, on the outside anyways).

I shook the jars after inoculating with LC, hoping that it would be enough, but I'll probably switch it up to shaking at 30% instead.

Good call, but FYI, to be useful data approaching science, has to be clones (too much variation with multi-spore), and every thing has to be identical. Not saying that to razz you, I say that anytime someone talks about doing an experiment or science on here. (Which is why I said I haven't done pie charts, but if I had, would be with clones. haha.)

The jars look good.

These are not MS jars. I started with spores on agar, transferred until clean and incidentally looking like a single strain. Then, transferred to honey LC, and ultimately into the jars. All jars received LC from the same LC jar.

So I would argue everything is exactly identical except for the amount of mycelium that was injected into each jar.

Oof, so much I still don't understand...

I don't understand the difference between a single strain on agar and a clone taken from a mushroom. I thought they were supposed to be pretty much the same thing.

A clone isn't an isolated strain. A mushroom can actually be made up of tens/hundreds of strains.

Often you'll hear the advice of going spores straight to a grow like with PF tek since that'll show you mushrooms that fruit the fastest. And THEN cloning one of them and isolating it further. The risk with isolating straight from spores is that you could be isolating horrible genetics. If you clone the biggest/fastest mushroom you know you have something good in there.

Isolating straight from spores means you only find out what you actually have once you're fruiting, which means you could be wasting not using your effort as optimally.
