Mantell was also involved with Nick in at least 2 other labs in St. Louis and Craig, Colorado.

- 1960: Time Magazine publishes an article titled "Medicine: Psychiatry in Prison"
Quote:
Medicine: Psychiatry in Prison Monday, Apr. 25, 1960
"I'm grown up now and I've got to recognize it,'' said the wavy-haired, blue-eyed Irish type from Oxnard, Calif. "Next time out, I'm going to try to get a job in San Francisco instead of going home. I don't want to go back to the same old temptations. And I can't go on being dependent on my folks. I'm not a kid any more." At 35, he has spent half his adult years in prison.
A hawk-nosed alcoholic from northern California asked the Oxnard man what he was running away from. The answer: "I don't think it's running away. It's learning to live with yourself. Even after you get out, you're still an ex-con. They can't cure you of what you did that got you in here. You've got to live with that."
Separating Sinners. Last week the man from Oxnard was "talking it out" in a group psychotherapy session at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, where he is now confined. With him were eight other convicted felons and Psychologist Gerald Berton. Most striking was the fact that Psychologist Berton, in charge of the twice-weekly, one-hour session, had the least to say.
The five-year-old Facility at Vacaville, a prison and mental hospital rolled into one, is virtually unique in the U.S.* Reason for its existence is the view, slowly spreading in the U.S. since the 1920s, that underlying most criminal conduct is emotional disturbance or outright mental illness. Carried to its logical extreme, this would mean abolishing prisons and putting all convicted criminals under psychiatric treatment. Society is far from ready for anything so visionary, and neither is organized psychiatry. As Kansas' famed Dr. Karl (Man Against Himself) Menninger puts it: "The sinners whose sins are inexplicable to laymen are officially labeled 'the insane'; those whom we think we understand ... are officially labeled 'criminals.' '' What has happened is that, largely under Dr. Menninger's prodding, U.S. criminologists and penologists are seeing more lawbreakers as mentally ill and fewer as "simply" criminal.
One end of the sprawling, ten-wing stucco structure outside Vacaville in Central Valley houses the reception-guidance center where all male felons convicted in California's northern 47 counties are studied for six to ten weeks. No treatment is given here, but all the men get exhaustive testing (IQ, aptitude, personality, "violence potential"). Mainly on the psychologists' advice, the state Department of Corrections then decides what prison to send them to—a maximum-security pen or a relatively open one.
The Broad Brush. The curative rather than punitive goal of the Medical Facility proper is proclaimed by the staff of Aesculapius over its main entrance. One-third or more of its 1,350 inmates are in for crimes involving violence—from robbery to rape and murder. Most of the rest are burglars, bad-check artists, or men caught up in the narcotics racket. Alcoholism is the commonest complicating factor, and a prison branch of A.A. offers help. By administrative fiat, but for no good psychiatric reason, all homosexuals rated as "effeminate" or "aggressive" are housed in a single cell block. These are among the least hopeful cases.
Says Superintendent William C. Keating Jr., 39, specialty-trained in administrative psychiatry at the Menninger Foundation: "Treating psychiatric patients as individuals is like painting cameos. I'm more of a muralist and like to work with a broader brush." With only six fulltime psychiatrists among the 14 M.D.s on his staff (plus 23 clinical psychologists and others equipped to lead group therapy), Dr. Keating can use only broad-stroke methods with the 700 patients rated as good treatment prospects. Chief Psychiatrist Knut H. Houck uses a variety of tranquilizing drugs for agitated patients and psychic energizers for the depressed. He hopes soon to try LSD-25 (TIME, March 28) to make psychotherapy more effective, especially in narcotic addiction and alcoholism.
Is prison psychiatry successful? Precise figures comparing crime-repeat rates after Medical Facility treatment and after ordinary imprisonment contain no pat answer, because of the way inmates are assigned and legal technicalities (e.g., a paroled felon is thrown back in the pen for committing a misdemeanor, though he may be close to "going straight"). A research program is under way to grade the expectations for a prisoner's future when he is committed, and test this prediction against his later performance.
In the occupational-therapy room last week, scores of prisoner-patients were making ceramics, doing woodwork and bookbinding, or putting their conflicts on canvas—some in the most modern nonobjective manner, others in representational styles recalling the tortured figures of Goya and the climbing workers of Rivera. From a low-fi record player came the inspirational strains of Beethoven's Eroica. The California Medical Facility is still a prison, but a prison with a difference.
* Founded earlier was the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners at Springfield. Mo., but overcrowding has defeated its purpose and led to inmate riots.

- 1973: George Baral's MDMA lab is busted
Quote:
Drug Lab' Raid Nets 2 Arrests
SPRINGFIELD — Two men were arrested yesterday [April 25th, 1973] after federal and state drug agents raided what they said was a clandestine drug laboratory in the basement of a farmhouse in the Turnersville community of Robertson County.
The agents said they seized flasks, vials and other lab equipment and chemicals needed to manufacture amphetamines and methamphetamines. drugs are some-times called "pep pills."
TWO CHICAGO rnen George Baral, 27, and Michael Hamilton, 24, were charged with conspiracy to manufacture controlled substances. A third Chicago man, David Muncaster, was charged in the complaint but his whereabouts were unknown last night. The raid ended a six months' surveillance by the federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, beginning when Chicago BNDD agents observed Muncaster and a woman, Toni Essary, loading cartons into a Maul trailer at the Sargent-Welch Scientific Co. in Skokie, Ill., authorities said. THE TRAILER was then driven to Nashville, and its contents unloaded and stored at the Action Moving and Storage Co., 600 Ninth Ave., S.. Nashville. they added. In an affidavit accompanying the search warrant fur the farmhouse, BNDD agent Francisco Guzman said Mun-caster told the storage company manager that he was opening a branch of the Bryan Chemical Co. of Chicago near Nashville. The affidavit said Muncaster listed the address of Bryan as 218 Third Ave. N., Nashville, an address which belongs to a Nashville law firm. Muncaster used the name "Arthur Gilbert." the affidavit said. ON MARCH 16. it continued, Hamilton, using the name of "Checkmate Movers," picked up some of the cartons. Baral, who is a chemist, ordered 12 kilos of methylamine from a Cincinnati company Monday, the affidavit said, in the name of Tropical Spice and Oil Co. of Pleasant View, Tenn. He allegedly told the firm he was in a hurry for the chemical and would drive to Cincinnati to pick it up. The underground lab was raided yesterday afternoon. BARAL, DENIED he intended to manufacture amphetamines. He said he is a professional chemist, who deals in "specialty chemicals." Hamilton listed his occupation as "truck driver." U.S. Magistrate Kent Sandidge III set bail for both men at $10,000 and set a preliminary hearing for 2 p m.
(Tennessean (Nashville, Tennessee), 26 Apr 1973, Thu, Page 21)
On 25 April 1973, more than 890 grams of pure MDMA (plus enough precursors for another 10 kg of MDMA) were confiscated by the DEA in a lab in Cedar Hill, Tennessee (Drug Control Section DEA 1984, 21). DEA officials reported that this and other “...laboratories seized were believed to be making a controlled substance (MDA),” but were found to be producing MDMA. Consequently, “investigations were not continued due to the noncontrolled status of MDMA” (Drug Control Section DEA 1984, 11).

- 1973: Owsley, Friedman, Sand, Scully, Mantell, Stark, Druce and Randall indicted for manufacturing and distribution of LSD
Quote:
'King of LSD' accused
Eight indicted for. vast LSD scheme
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) —Eight men including the one-time "King of LSD" have been indicted on federal charges of running a worldwide scheme of manufacturing and selling hallucinogenic drugs. The federal Grand Jury Wednesday [April 25th 1973] said LSD plants were operated here and in Windsor, Calif., St. Louis and Fenton, Mo.. and in Belgium. The main clients, according to federal narcotics agents, were Timothy Leary's Brotherhood of Eternal Love of Southern California and the Hell's Angels motorcycle club of Northern California. Among the indicted was Augustus Owsley Stanley III, 37, San Rafael, Calif., who in the 1960s was known as the "King of LSD." He was charged with failing to file income tax returns for 1967 and 1968. The government said he owed taxes of $142,276. U.S. Attorney James L. Browning Jr. said Stanley's income was from the sale of the drugs. But, the prosecutor said, he was not connected with distributing the acid. The indictment said the conspiracy lasted from 1967 through January of this year. Federal agents traveled extensively in the United States during the investigation and also went to Paris, Afghanistan, Costa Rica, Mexico City, Belgium and Honduras. Three of the suspects, including Stanley, were accused of evading $364,939 in taxes. Officials said Stanley was convicted of manufacturing LSD in 1969 and spent 2-1/2 years in a federal prison. Last December he was freed on parole. Another tax offender was identified as Nicholas Sand, 31, a chemist now in jail in St. Louis for opium possession. He was accused of evading $181,000 for 1968 and 1969. The third one was Robert T. Scully, 28, an electronics technician from Mendocino County, Calif. He was accused of evading $41,848 in taxes for 1969. The other five defendants were identified as David Leigh Mantell, 33, whose whereabouts were unknown; Lester Friedman, 44, a chemistry professor at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio; Ronald Hadley Stark, 35, New York City; Charles Druce, London, England; Michael B. Randall, 29, address unknown. The indictment said Sand in July 1968 met with Leary, now serving a sterm in state prison, in Idyllwild, Calif., to deliver LSD tablets. It also said Sand, Mantell and John T. Tracy, now dead and a former Hell's Angel leader, met and agreed to sell acid to the renegade motorcycle club on a continuing basis. Not indicted but listed by the Grand Jury as co-conspirators were Peter S. Buchanan, a San Francisco lawyer; John R. Griggs, now dead; John D. Tracy, also deceased; William M. Hitchcock, Tucson, Ariz.; Charles G. Rumsey Jr., Meetessee, Wyo.; and Todd Sorenson, an American who formerly lived in Belgium.

- 1976: John Lennon and Paul McCartney meet for the last time
Quote:
John Lennon and Paul McCartney's final meeting Sunday 25 April 1976
The day after they considered an appearance on NBC's Saturday Night (later Saturday Night Live), John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the final time.
Although the pair were on good terms, the encounter was not a success. McCartney turned up unannounced at the Dakota building, where Lennon lived, and was turned away.
That was a period when Paul just kept turning up at our door with a guitar. I would let him in, but finally I said to him, 'Please call before you come over. It's not 1956, and turning up at the door isn't the same anymore. You know, just give me a ring.' He was upset by that, but I didn't mean it badly. I just meant that I was taking care of a baby all day, and some guy turns up at the door.
John Lennon, 1980 All We Are Saying, David Sheff
McCartney left for Dallas, Texas, where the following day Wings began rehearsals for the US leg of their world tour. Although he stayed in contact with Lennon until the latter's death in 1980, the pair would never again meet face-to-face.

Note that the George Baral lab bust is the earliest MDMA lab bust that I'm aware of. Law enforcement thought he was making MDA, LSD and DET, not MDMA (which wasn't illegal at the time). It isn't clear to me exactly what he was actually making.
I have no idea how this whole thing turned out, but there were two mistrials (1st mistrial and 2nd mistrial) in his case. He may have gotten off scot-free due to his defense that he was making the (legal) MDMA and/or because of an illegal search. If anyone has any further information on this case, please share it with me/us.

Lennon seems like a douche during their last meeting. Some guy just shows up on his door with a guitar. That some guy was one of his besties who he considered buying an island with. He would show up with a guitar so they could jam like old times. Some guy who just so happened to help you become a part of music history forever as well as millions of dollars. If any of my friends, or my wife's, or my kids friends show up unannounced, I'm gonna let them in and get me a drink. No food unless the are there for a while though, I'm not their grandma.

45th anniversary of David Mantell being indicted on his birthday, along with Owsley Stanley, Lester Friedman, Nick Sand, Tim Scully, Ronald Stark, Charles Druce and Michael Randall.
Also 45th anniversary of the first MDMA lab bust that I'm aware of. George Baral's lab may have been the first ever. Who knows.

Actually, the more research I do, I'm becoming certain the George Baral was the first person ever busted for manufacturing MDMA, back on April 25, 1973.
