Salt water
    #2828685 - 06/25/04 05:00 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

With all the talk of salt acting as an Anti-contaminant I was curious if one could at a "tolerable" level of salt to the water when making jars or grain bags. Would this help at all, if not too much salt was put in the water? Or would it inhibit mycelium growth? I haven't done a search on this so forgive me if this has been discussed previously.

Also, since salt is a drying agent, I would assume that one would use more water. Anyone?

The whole reason salt works is because it is a drying agent. Basically you are desicating the contaminant on the surface of the casing. Salt water wouldn't work in the same manner unless you were dealing with a salt tolerant species, which I don't think cubes are. By adding water to salt you remove its ability to act as a desicant, at that point the salt water only messes with the fungi's osmosis which would affect most fungi except the salt tolerant ones.

So, no I doubt if salt water would help any.

Joshua
