WTF, St. Johns wort is a MAO inhibitor?
    #2828821 - 06/25/04 08:04 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

"2.4.2 St. John's Wort (Hypericum) and MAO inhibition

>>St John's Wort does in fact work like an MAO inhibitor and likewise causes the same dangerous side-effects.
>That's the wrong term. They're not "side effects"; they're food or drug interactions. But if SJW is an MAO-inhibitor then they're certainly "dangerous".

From smisch.tiac.net (Samson):

Yes, they would be if SJW really _were_ a MAOI. But it's not. That was a theory that was floating around for a while without much support, and it has since been disproven.

See eg.

Thiede HM; Walper A: Inhibition of MAO and COMT by Hypericum extracts and hypericin. J Geriatr Psychiatry Neurol, 7 Suppl 1:1994 Oct, S54-6
Bladt S; Wagner H: Inhibition of MAO by fractions and constituents of Hypericum extract. J Geriatr Psychiatry Neurol, 7 Suppl 1:1994 Oct, S57-9
"Using pure hypericin as well as in all ex vivo experiments, no relevant inhibiting effects could be shown. From the results it can be concluded that the clinically proven anti-depressive effect of Hypericum extract cannot be explained in terms of MAO inhibition."

Hypericin does show some MAO-inhibition in vitro at _very_ high concentrations. At regular human doses, though, virtually nil."

What the deuce, never heard this before. what yall think? heres link.

I researched St. John's Wort extensively several years ago but have since not followed any studies concerning it.

At that point, SJW had been shown to be an maoi in rats, but there was no hard data about mao inhibition in humans. From what I remember, it was assumed that SJW was indeed a weak maoi in humans and in a way contraindicated itself through it's various modes of action. However, at regular doses this doesn't seem to be a problem in the real world.

It was a strong enough maoi inhibitor that I did have some nasty side effects from combining it with ephedrine, which is contraindicated with maois.

thats what i was wondering, safety with certain other drugs. I have 2 cups of tea everynight to help me get to sleep, didnt want to mess anythign up.

I was just reading that it inhibited HIV, and that the phototoxins absorbed in cancer cells and when exposed to light fucks em up. Damn this is an interesting plant. if your so inclined i would LOVE to hear what youve learned or some links you may have.

do you know how long it takes for the phototoxins to be out or dubed down enough for it to be non functunal in direct sunlight? Im in the beating sun for roughly 4-6 hours a day, some of these sites are starting to freak me out with the effects t can cause.

Like I said, that was several years ago, so I don't know what my sources would have been.  I'd try pubmed or something like that.  A university journal search if you have access to one.

Just wear spf 45  and you'll be fine in the sun.

i belive it is known to have SSRI type qualitys that combat deppression. not MAOI. but it possibly could be both.

St.john wort is many things, but even though it IS an MAOI, its a weak one thats safe with food, and useless with psychedelics.

try reading ...... st.johns wort: the miracle medicine.
