How to reuse plastic containers to grow reishi and pink oysters ?
    #28218602 - 03/07/23 09:04 AM (11 months, 11 days ago)

hello.... since almost 3 years i fruit pink oysters ( straw / rice skull sub ) and reishi ( saw dust sub ) inside plasti containers like water gallons, oil gallons, coconut oil 2 liters container, 3l plastic bottles and more recycled material.....we usually was them after fruiting and reuse. We use to wash with soaps and 10% clorine and is working good. But recently i had an issue with reishi : i had lots of contamination ( more than usual ) and i tried different things: my last experiment was to change for new containers ( i used a new plastic coca cola bottle and few new water gallons) and i had 100% success...

I undurstand that we do notwas very well our containers... what do you suggest? how to wasproperly without machinery ?

My idea was to use a big 200 liters water drum , fill up with water and clorine ( which percentage? ) and leave them for a while inside there .... Wrong ? good? clorine percentage?

thanks a lot in advance !

I use soap and water. Sometimes hit them with 75% iso after.
I have used bleach plenty of times around a 10 solution. I also use to work a at brewery and was able to get all sorts of cleaning solutions. Maybe see what your local brewery uses to sanitize. Shitz expensive though. I double back on soap and water.
Why with out machinery. A dishwasher should be easy to find on the cheap.

how do you pasteurize your sub? if its with heat, you may be able to hit all the containers with boiling water( it wont be boiling by the time it goes in but close) watch for deformation and then clean with at least dawn blue soap or an equivalent. if that still doesnt work and you have hydrated lime, you may be able to cold pasteurize the containers then wash them out.

the beer cleaning idea by bw86 is genius, one that comes to mind is starsan. it may or may not help but its sworn by in homebrewing.

either way, if its pet or hdpe, itll probably be a chemical clean and not one of tempature.

I would ditch the containers and go to bags. You are spending all the time cleaning the containers and it's not worth it. Do the math $0.35 for a crop that you will be able to sell for $20. Stop stepping over dollars to pick up pennies!!

I used to use a bunch of these ice cream containers.

I would give them to my family to grow their own.  Most worked and some did not.  I did not clean too well and most of the stuff I used besides the seed spawn was just pasteurized with hot water.  I should have had more problems then I did cause some was just straw bedding from when I cleaned the chicken house and was not clean to start with.  You don't want contamination but for pure hobby and a gift here and there, a little does not kill you cause except for time you have little invested though dish soap is not free and you use a lot.
