I wonder how it's possible that they last so long for you. Do you live in a super dry climate by any chance?

Workman's post copied from a parallel universe.
Posted 14 July 2007 - 12:54 PM
This thread is a bit premature but I am so relieved I just had to post.
I was prompted by Prankster to look at my Psilocybe semperviva spores (aka Psilocybe hoogshagenii var. convexa) in cold storage. The last time I grew this species was in 2002 and when I opened up the prints I realized how few spores I actually had. Tiny light partial prints that might now be dead after over 5 years in storage. These prints were generated from the original Heim collection from the 1950's and are almost irreplaceable. I felt sick that through my neglect I had lost this species.
Fortunately, all plates germinated well and are well on their way to being transfered to substrates for grow out. And now I know that I can safely store spores of this species for at least 5 years.
I feel so much better :eusa_danc And now we dance!!!

South Puget Sound Washington State USA. We have moss on our backs and webbed fingers. Workman was just a few hours south of here when this was taking place.

So do you guys store them in any special way? Fridge? Jars with silica?
I always find it mindblowing because being in Central Europe, even Cube prints are 100% dead after 2.5 years. So I actually cannot rely on prints at all for species preservation lasting multiple years.

I've had Tamps last over 13 years and Cubensis spores last well over 14 in aqueous solution (1 gram agar to 1 gallon H2O). Syringes stored in a refrigerator and sometimes jars when usage is high. Oyster LC for well over ten years in LC. Recently Zapotecorum LC at three years.. better than most prints of that species. I prefer slants or LC over petris for storing culture as they tend to dry out after a few years. For prints.. double bagged and put into a sealed container. Kept in a cupboard where it's cool and dry. Sealing them seems to be the key here. Lesser quality seals won't last nearly as long for me.

I’m in as dry a climate as you can get. I store all my spores in bags in a drawer so it’s dark but not cold. It seems to be totally random. My semp died off real fast, and with cubes I’ve had 3 year old prints germ immediately and some that were 100% dead after 1.5 years, possibly sooner cuz I hadn’t tried them earlier.

The whole discussion about spores above was fascinating

I "did" it last summer. Same, contam cakes went outside. I broke them up to fit the container. Covered it with a layer of homemade compost, and put row cover on top to keep humidity:

They grew quite small. Haven't tested the potency yet.

i store all my prints in this plastic pot that i keep in a drawer its cool and dark place, i got a AA+ 4 year old print germinated in 3 days but still no luck on Semperviva, ended up using half of the print and made a spore syringe

Agreed. The more I see the less I know. Now I'm at the point of total confusion I believe vacuum-sealing would do the job though.

Finally seeing some spores around 3 weeks from pinning.

I just can’t keep the caps from curling up though.

Wait for a 2nd flush maybe. That tends to help.

Yea mate, it should be real easy too. Just drill through some metal jar lid, silicone-glue a simple vacuum valve to it, and then just suck out the air. You can even use a hand-powered vacuum pump. These things can give you very decent vacuum. This could honestly become the gold standard for spore storage in the future, if it works as well as I think it might.

As time goes forward I'm getting happier with this flush. It's coming in unevenly but once these pins grow the canopy will be less sparse. Such pretty shrooms. They're getting big with some chonkers in there I'm gonna try cloning.
Haven't tried cloning semps yet we'll see how that goes.

Those look great Shrug!
I found these the other day, stored in a box on the floor of a closet for 15-20 years? They are print from the cube I grew 'back in the day'. I'll have to give them a go, see if they'll start.

On the Subtropicalis front. I have WBR cooling for some mycelium tek with Xica genetics, a shoebox sitting of my old genetics and a couple bags of Xica ready for a trashcan grow outdoors.

Would it be possible to cross this with another species like Cube or Natalensis? Maybe we can make them grow faster or bulk them up by doing so if it's possible. I know it's probably a dumb question but it's 420 and I'm not thinking clearly.

cutting corners? nah, let's keep it slow and steady. i for one don't like the idea of maximizing everything all the time. and by the way i do not think it's doable?!?
