US charges 28 members of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel including El Chapo’s sons
April 14, 2023 - The Guardian

The US justice department has charged 28 members of Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa cartel, including sons of notorious drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, in a sprawling fentanyl-trafficking investigation.

The attorney general, Merrick Garland, announced the charges on Friday alongside the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) chief, Anne Milgram, and other top federal prosecutors. The charges were filed against cartel leaders, as well alleged chemical suppliers, lab managers, fentanyl traffickers, security leaders, financiers and weapons traffickers.

The indictments announced on Friday charge three of Guzmán’s sons – Ovidio Guzmán López, Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar and Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar – who are known as the Chapitos, or little Chapos, and who have earned a reputation as the more violent and aggressive faction of the cartel.

Only Guzmán López is in custody, in Mexico.

The indictments also charge Chinese and Guatemalan citizens accused of supplying precursor chemicals required to make fentanyl. Others charged in the cases include those accused of running drug labs and providing security and weapons for the drug trafficking operation, prosecutors said.

Nearly 107,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in the US in 2021. The Drug Enforcement Administration says most the fentanyl trafficked in the United States comes from the Sinaloa cartel.

The Sinaloa cartel’s notorious drug lord was convicted in 2019 of running an industrial-scale smuggling operation. At his trial, prosecutors said evidence gathered since the late 1980s showed he and his murderous cartel made billions of dollars by smuggling tons of cocaine, heroin, meth and marijuana into the US.

In outlining the charges, Garland described the violence of the Sinaloa cartel, describing how its members have tortured perceived enemies, including Mexican law enforcement officials. In some cases, cartel members have also fed victims, some still alive, to tigers owned by Guzmán’s sons, Garland said.

Eight of those charged in Friday’s case have been arrested and remain in custody of law enforcement officials outside of the US. The US government is offering rewards for several others charged in the case.

Ovidio Guzmán López, one of Guzmán’s sons, was arrested in January in the Sinaloa capital of Culiacán, by the Mexican army and national guard.

Ovidio Guzmán, nicknamed “the Mouse”, had not been one of El Chapo’s better-known sons until an aborted operation to capture him three years earlier. He was briefly detained in 2019, but authorities released him on the orders of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador after cartel gunmen unleashed a wave of violence.

After Guzmán’s rearrest, the cartel launched a similar wave of retaliatory attacks, shutting down the city’s airport, but failing to prevent authorities from taking him from the city. About 30 people died in the violence.

The US government is currently awaiting the younger Guzmán’s extradition.

Ovidio Guzmán López and his brother Joaquín Guzmán López allegedly helped moved the Sinaloa cartel hard into methamphetamines, producing prodigious quantities in large labs. They were previously indicted in 2018 in Washington on drug trafficking charges.

The other two sons Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar and Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Sálazar, are believed to have been running cartel operations together with Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. They were previously also charged in the US in Chicago and San Diego.

Zambada had been rumoured to be in poor health and isolated in the mountains leading the sons to try to assert a stronger role to keep the cartel together.

The DEA said it investigated the case in 10 countries: Australia, Austria, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Greece, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and the United States.

“Death and destruction are central to their whole operation,” Milgram said of the cartel.

Just really don't give a shit anymore.

Changed the heart to a wink, really what it is with the corruption and alll of it..  Narcos and just news I don't want it yet I get it to what I do.

Dumb people.  Please don't murder me.  Such power to murder a person.  Notice how El Chapo livied with all of those riches?  Yeah for awhile was amazing but time.  Not complicated to figure out.  I don't want to live like that.  To those that do, no offense, I stay out of your way.

Am in psychelics.

Mexico president slams US ‘spying’ after traffickers charged
April 16, 2023 - Associated Press

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president lashed out Monday at what he called U.S. “spying” and “interference” in Mexico, days after U.S. prosecutors announced charges against 28 members of the Sinaloa cartel for smuggling massive amounts of fentanyl into the United States.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador suggested Monday that the case had been built on information gathered by U.S. agents in Mexico, and said “foreign agents cannot be in Mexico.”

He called the Sinaloa investigation “abusive, arrogant interference that should not be accepted under any circumstances.”

A former top U.S. drug enforcement agent called the president’s comments unjustified. Mike Vigil, former head of international operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration, said López Obrador was mistakenly assuming that U.S. agents needed to be in Mexico to collect intelligence for the case. In fact, much of the case appears to have come from trafficking suspects caught in the U.S.

“He wants to completely destroy the working relationship that has taken decades to build,” Vigil said. “This is going to translate into more drugs reaching the United States and more violence and corruption in Mexico.”

López Obrador continued Monday to describe fentanyl — a synthetic opioid that causes about 70,000 overdose deaths annually in the United States — as a U.S. problem, claiming it isn’t made in Mexico. He has suggested American families hug their children more, or keep their adult children at home longer, to stop the fentanyl crisis.

The Mexican president also made it clear that fighting fentanyl trafficking takes a back seat to combating Mexico’s domestic security problems, and that Mexico is helping only out of good will.

“What we have to do first is guarantee public safety in our country ... that is the first thing,” López Obrador said, “and in second place, help and cooperate with the U.S. government.”

Vigil pointed out that it was the very same cartels trafficking fentanyl and methamphetamines that cause most of the violence in Mexico. Avoiding confrontations with cartels is unlikely to bring peace, Vigil said, noting “it is going to have exactly the opposite effect.”

The U.S. charges announced Friday revealed the brutal and shocking methods the cartel, based in the northern state of Sinaloa, used to move massive amounts of increasingly cheap fentanyl into the United States.

Apparently eager to corner the market and build up a core market of addicts, the cartel was wholesaling counterfeit pills containing fentanyl for as little as 50 cents apiece.

López Obrador own administration has acknowledged finding dozens of labs where fentanyl is produced in Mexico from Chinese precursor chemicals, mainly in the northern state of Sinaloa.

Most illegal fentanyl is pressed by Mexican cartels into counterfeit pills made to look like other medications like Xanax, oxycodone or Percocet, or mixed into other drugs, including heroin and cocaine. Many people who die of overdoses in the United States do not know they are taking fentanyl.

López Obrador deeply resents U.S. allegations of corruption in Mexico, and fought tooth and nail to avoid a U.S. trial of former defense secretary Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos on U.S. charges of aiding a drug gang in 2020.

López Obrador at one point threatened to kick DEA agents out of Mexico unless the general was returned, which he was. Cienfuegos was quickly freed once he returned. Since then, the Mexican government has imposed restrictive rules on how agents can operate in Mexico, and slowed down visa approvals for a time.

Well when they can manage to keep a #1 prisoner from escaping in straight up Looney Toons fashion maybe they’ll get to play too.

Who gives a fuck?  The DEA is the REASON why the cartel makes so much money.  They'd never be able to sell enough guns or traffick enough humans or stolen goods to maintain the power and influence they have without illegal drugs and all that entails. Regulate the supply of quality drugs for a start and let's see how much money the cartel makes.  I bet they were raking it in when weed was straight illegal, now I doubt they receive 1% of all money spent on cannabis.

What?

I don't understand what your driving at, they are guilty of horrible crimes, PRIMARILY financed by the black market price of drugs...that doesn't change what I said though.

My point is that without drug money the cartel will kind of shrivel up like the mafia, we could nab them on RICO statutes and they wouldn't have enough money to buy the Mexican president or other important politicians that basically wave cartel activity through...

They have their hands in more shit than drugs.  Weed gets smuggled there now.  It’s a new day, man.  The cartel doesn’t pay off the politicians the politicians pay off the cartels.  This shit is pandoras box now and it’s heading for everyone’s front door because who needs a border?  Give them full healthcare, let them vote, it’s the whole nine.

I liked the idea of Cheran kicking out competing, political parties, until the citizens' militia started chopping down all the avocado trees. Artichokes and refrigerants have also been the subjects of cartel activity. Kitchen seasonings, booze, molasses, tea, and stationary have been the subject of Stamp Acts -- most of which have none of the stigma of being moral vices, except for the cartel activity vs. state sanctioned acts of piracy. They are tolerated in their private capacity.
