The only purpose for foil that I can think of would be for bottom-watering cakes, but that's not a super common practice from what I have seen.

Thank you. Wasn't sure if the foil had another purpose other than to separate the cakes from the perlite because people still use it with a water tub.

No. OP even uses foil in his first picture and then never again.

Contrary information confuses me.

I believe those are the metal lids under the cakes.  Because we don't want to harvest off the bottom or have upside down growing mushrooms.  Foil the size of the cake would do the same thing.  Either way it's not a big deal, one way or the other you'll get results.  I think for ease of harvest putting something under the cake is good, and the metal lid is just the right size.

If you've never grown mushrooms before, here's how you start.  First, follow the Updated PF Tek, put 4 holes in jar lids not 1, and use a water tub!
The next move is Shoebox Tek. After that you move onto grains, agar, monotubs.  Agar is easy, just do it.

No perlite mentioned.

I was asking about the foil, not perlite.

Foil is used to keep the bottom of your cake from growing into whatโ€™s beneath it, thatโ€™s all.

Can a water tub be too large so the cakes can't create their own micro climate?

I bought a 80 liter tub for 10 cakes and i wonder if this works out.

The more full your water tub the better it will perform. Having said that, I have fruited 1 or 2 cakes in a 100L tub fine. If you just have a few cakes, simply make sure theyโ€™re close to one another

Yeah, but i've never grown before and i am sure that 9 of them will die due to contam.

:cryaboutit:

So i want to increase chances by quantitiy.

If they make it to full colonization in the jar, theyโ€™ll fruit.

Iโ€™ve done something like 120 PF jars. Not sure on the total number but itโ€™s over 100. I lost probably 5 to contamination. I really donโ€™t remember the exact numbers, so forgive me for the bad data.

PF tek is a pretty damn reliable method of starting out. Thatโ€™s why it is constantly suggested.

You got this, dude.

Has anyone considered adding Calcium Hydroxide (slaked lime) to the water at the bottom of the tank?
It would help keep it sterile and also absorb CO2.

I donโ€™t think itโ€™s necessary. Co2 isnโ€™t a concern, and the water stays good for like 2 months.

OK, thanks.  I though getting rid of the CO2 was important. but I'm a beginner so still learning.

If you have significant enough CO2 built up anywhere, youโ€™ve got problems lime isnโ€™t going to solve. They need air like grasshoppers in a jar need air. Couple of homes here, a cracked lid there, youโ€™re good.

First time grower and im using an all in one bag, its been really cold here and took longer than expected to get colonised. Took out the bag and tried fruiting but it started bruising from drying out so followed advice to dunk and rolled and now trying again in water tub.

I dunked for 24 hrs then rolled in verm, its been a 6 days initially for the 2 days i kept the tub closed there was a lot of new fluffy white growth around the side over the verm layer but none on top, is the verm a bit too thick?

Since cracking the lid its not changed- i may be misting too much too and it doesnt look as fluffy as it did, i cant seem to get getting fine droplets dialled in i find it hard to see them.

Its at 67-70f in the tub, with an oil rad heating the room, the rh is 50% in the room.

Should i do something or just leave it alone with the lid cracked still?

I'm having problems with a bulk not fruiting so have broken it up to fruit in a water tub like it's a cake. Will see what happens.

If you get aerial mycelium or fuzzy feet, then yes, you should start trying to manage FAE/COยฒ. I did this by drilling tiny holes above the waterline, but below the cakes. COยฒ is more dense than Oยฒ and will lie on the bottom. If you make a couple holes, this will help COยฒ leave the container as well as promote evaporation. They have to be very tiny (1 mm) though, because you also want to maintain heat generated by growth as well as RH inside the tub.

How long was it growing in bulk? What substrate/ratio? What method? Sometimes all it takes is a flush and you will be harvesting 7-8 days later.

Thanks for this TEK. It saved what was going to be a failed BRF grow in an SGFC that was in a room with forced air that was likely too disruptive to the air currents in the room. Out of the 4 cakes, I left 2 rolled in verm while I covered the other 2 with moist coir as per the tek. Both fruited but I'm not sure what to do with the coir coated cakes now for the second flush. Do I dunk these to rehydrate them like with normal BRF cakes? Or should I just mist heavily for the first day or so. Seems like a dunk would dislodge the coir which has colonized to some extent. Thanks!
