Bicycle Day 4/19 May Soon Overtake Cannabis Holiday 4/20 * 2

Bicycle Day 4/19 May Soon Overtake Cannabis Holiday 4/20
April 11, 2023 - Forbes, by Andrew DeAngelo

April 19th aka Bicycle Day, the day we honor chemist Albert Hofmann and his discovery of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), may soon overtake cannabis holiday 420 as the most important celebration of visionary medicine in the world. The psychedelics community has done an outstanding job bringing these compounds to the mainstream, to the point that even the stigma surrounding mushrooms is far less than weed currently.

“Each year, there seem to be more and more events surrounding Bicycle Day—and, to me, this is an indication of the continued growing interest in psychedelics,” shares DoubleBlind Co-founder Shelby Hartman. “For the last several years, we've been saying that psychedelics are "going mainstream," but now it feels like they just are mainstream.” That doesn't mean everyone is doing them, she cautions. It just means that there are still a lot of people out there who are curious about microdosing and taking larger dose journeys, but have not taken the opportunity to dive in quite yet. It may take years time, but one can easily envision a 4/19 where we all trip together on a global level, jump on those literal and figurative bicycles, and keep that magical ride of Albert Hoffman’s going for generations to come.

As we’ve established, psychedelics are increasingly becoming more mainstream but Exile and Ecstasy: Growing up with Ram Dass and Coming of Age in the Jewish Psychedelic Underground author Madison Margolin would rather see the mainstream become more psychedelic. “How can we incorporate the ethos of these substances into our culture at large, and prioritize healing and connection—among other values that we may come to under the psychedelic influence—into the way we move through mundane life?” Margolin wonders. “If people experience a sense of oneness, acceptance, and embodiment through psychedelic consciousness, my prayer would be for us to find avenues in our personal lives and societal systems to integrate the consciousness of the medicine into the everyday.”

For many, 4/19 is a coming out celebration. “Bicycle Day is a chance to celebrate my identity as a psychonaut and a champion of cognitive liberty,” shares Mycopreneur Podcast host and Psychedelic Puppet Show Creative Director Dennis Walker. “For so long I’ve had to hide this part of who I am, and now I get to unabashedly share it with the world.” Primarily known for his satire, Walker’s commentary is resonating with the community, and helping to bring important topics surrounding psychedelics to the wider global audience.

For others, it’s a portal to creating art. Best described as psychedelic, indie, experimental art rock with pop sensibilities, Kukuni’s recently launched self-titled album speaks the language of the subconscious, and is greatly influenced by these visionary medicines. “I’m not sure who I would be without psychedelics,” shares LA-based Kukuni frontman Willy Christie.”They certainly helped me uncover my purpose as a musician, and they continue to fuel the meaning behind most of my creative output.” Kukuni is releasing a music video for the song ”Forever” soon, and the psychedelic theme is very prominent in the lyrics and images accompanying it. “LSD helps open the doorway to the Eternal Now, also known as Forever,” adds Christie. “When you’re in it…it feels like a dream.”

There’s a cosmic connection between dreams and reality, and sometimes LSD can be the bridge. Music and sound healing duo Jenny Deveau and Seth Misterka of Dynasty Electrik were initiated into a practice of shamanic sound healing in 2012, and subsequently combined this ancient wisdom with their knowledge of music to create a unique style of sound therapy. “On April 29, 2008, we were having the most amazing LSD trip of our lives on top of a mountain in the Monteverde Cloud Forest of Costa Rica,” shares Seth and Jenny.

“Up there, sitting on top of the world, it felt like the veil between the mystical and the mundane had broken down completely.” They could see how their thoughts and feelings were manifesting as external reality. “A golden scarab beetle crossed right in front of us as our thoughts formed into clouds and new weather systems,” Seth recounted. “When we came back down from the mountain, we learned that Albert Hofmann had died that day while we were having that otherworldly trip.” It was such a beautiful experience that the duo haven’t felt like taking LSD since.

For most, psychedelics help change perspectives, which is crucial due to the pejorative narrative that’s been unjustly assigned to these visionary medicines. “There’s this realization that we are all one in this universe, and that separation is an illusion,” shares Angela White, Success Centers Equity for Industry Program Manager. “When people see what they have in common rather than what is different, we come together — it’s the best medicine for stubborn people.” White develops sustainable career and entrepreneurial paths previously less accessible to communities impacted by inequality and the War on Drugs, so she knows a thing or two about the importance of perspective shifts, and how they can positively impact communities.

For those of us who have fought hard to help shepard cannabis through prohibition, we believe there are lessons that can be learned from our journey. My brother and fellow activist Steve DeAngelo believes we should not rely on the broken system we seek to change to give us the resources we need to fix it: “I would like to see the psychedelic movement focus more on alternative, community-based funding mechanisms, instead of using the same investment bankers and public markets that have already destroyed the soul of the cannabis industry.” And Angela’s Success Centers colleague E. Diaz posits, “Psychedelics should be advocated as medicine the same way that cannabis is, since it has therapeutic effects in a way that conventional medicine doesn't, much like cannabis.”

One thing is certain, these visionary plants and compounds are gaining momentum. There seems to be very few people these days who haven't at least heard about trends like microdosing, lemon tekking, and Set & Setting, and are curious…inspired to learn more. We've officially graduated from destigmatization to curiosity, much like we did in cannabis right before many states started legalizing the plant. It’s an important moment to be having these mindful conversations about what we want the future of psychedelics to look like. “Do we want to frame psychedelics as, primarily, tools for mental health? Do we want to talk about them as tools for creativity and general wellness? And is it okay to just trip for fun?,” asks Hartman. “Meanwhile, longtime stakeholders within the industry are continuing to think critically about setting up a landscape that centers equity, access, and reciprocity—so that we don't wake up one day and realize it's too late.”

It's often a heavily debated topic, but I have it on good authority that the real origin of 4/20 is actually because of bicycle day.
Bicycle day was 4/19 and after that was 4/20
Everyone has their own theory, but unrelated 60s hippies I've known have told me 4/20 actually started out as an LSD thing.

It's a heated topic lol

I really appreciate that with all the other excellent scifi and psychedelic reference in your profile that I observed you at being last seen 42 seconds ago

"It was such a beautiful experience that the duo haven’t felt like taking LSD since."

I really like that line because it's true, when you get the call hang up the phone!

I feel like people that truly appreciate psychedelics will often know when enough is enough and when to trip again, nothing wrong with dosing often, but it seems like many just overuse certain things and in doing so debase powerful plant teachers to "street drugs" if that makes sense.

I hope I don't sound like a douche, just a thought.
