Hot dogs, hippocracy, natives, the church, fire, and hippies
    #2816855 - 06/22/04 11:07 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

I come from a place with lots of hippies, rainbow kids, people like that. Here are a couple of funny observations:

They don't like hotdogs because hotdogs are made from all the "gross" waste meat like eyelids and rectums. Then they go and worship the native americans as enlightened demigods who are purported to use "every part of the buffalo."

They don't like organized religion. The church is evil, the followers are mindless sheep blah blah blah. Then you're sitting around the fire with these people, and they want to share the energy of the fire circle with an impromptu ritual of holding all our hands together or whatever.. But wait, we're all sitting at the fire so we already ARE sharing the energy, what's with the need to formalize these things with rituals?? If you ask me these rituals take you out of the "in the now" of the experience, just like organized religion does. Therefore, "non-conformist" hippies are actually the progenitors of organized religion!! Tell your friends, THEY MUST BE STOPPED!!!!

yeah but theyre making those rituals spontaneuosly, on an impulse, based on a desire to capture the magic of a moment, to share something unique and special, as opposed to following a step by step religious recipe from a ten thousand year old book every sabbath day.

And they respect native americans for being non wastefull, as opposed to hotdogs, which are representative of the most wastefull culture this planet has ever seen. The native americans used every piece of the buffalo out of respect for the animal and the needs of survival, Schneiders uses every part of the cow and raccoon to squeeze a few more cents out of there disgusting factory farms

no comparison

no one is saying you must do those things.
The point is that this is disorganized religion, not organized religion, and thus not hypocritical.

yeah but theyre making those rituals spontaneuosly, on an impulse, based on a desire to capture the magic of a moment, to share something unique and special,
See, I don't find them that spontaneous exactly.. having to organize a moment just.. not spontaneous in my books. And that tendency to try and capture moments (as opposed to experiencing them) to me is the root of boring meaningless rituals. I'd rather just have the moment and then let go and move on to the next.

americans used every piece of the buffalo out of respect for the animal and the needs of survival, Schneiders uses every part of the cow and raccoon to squeeze a few more cents

Well, I don't doubt the americans respect their source of income more than the hotdog factory but I think the natives use every part of the animal for the same reason the hotdog people do: maximum efficiency. It's not like mother earth really wastes anything. When you kill an animal and throw out its spleen and its hide, you aren't disrespecting that animal, you are selflessly contributing to the nourishment of myriad scavengers and microorganisms.

You speak truth...the Rainbow people also need to learn about personal hygiene as well. I had to stand in line at the store behind some of them a few years back when they came to town for a "love fest" and I nearly blew my groceries it stank so bad. They can promote free love all they want, but I don't want it if it smells like old cabbage.

I dont have alot of experience with rainbow people.

but I worked with a couple of them one summer at a localist/sustainability NPO

rainbow child one: was always late. Never did any work. Had a hippy boyfriend that beat her up routinely.

rainbow child two: super stoner who would get all creepy and make threats if you challenged his insane ideas.

ahhh, violence, threats of violence, too many drugs and the abuse of charity, keep living the dream rainbow children!!!

i know some people who try pretty hard to be hippie-ish. some of them don't eat meat because they feel it's bad for them. then they smoke cigarettes, pot, and drink booze. some of them rail about overconsumption of natural resources... and they are the only people i know who eat everything off paper plates. some of them tell me about how bad christianity is and how good the eastern ways are, but can tell me nothing about either other than the name of the diety on the tapestry in their living room.

eh. just some observations. they're good people, but hypocrites. ("hyppies" i guess.)

Well said. What bugs me the most is all of the close-minded left wingers in my area who are convinced that their view of the world is correct. Actually all people who are convinced that their view of the world is correct piss me off. Peace!
