What are the most distinctive and best whiskies you've ever tried?
I like the peatiness of Laproaig 10. I like the double-oak version of Woodfords reserve for woodiness.

personally i think a lot of the high end scots whisky is way overated and over priced (macallan etc ) i prefer the taste of pot still irish such as green spot /redbreast - or the best bang for the buck is powers gold.

The best irish whisky does seem to be a better bang for the buck than the Scots whisky.
I like Bushmills, a great whisky at only $20.

Generally, my go to's include, in no particular order:- Talisker 10, a bit firey, salty with solid peat. Their limited edition stuff, specifically the 57 north, was absolutely fantastic!
- Caol Ila 12 or 18. I like the 12 so much that I don't typically spend for the 18, although it is a little nicer. Smooth, good peat presence.
- Lagavulin 16. A classic, very smooth with a good peat hit.
- Balvenie Caribbean Cask. A very interesting, and to my taste very good, whisky aged in rum barrels. Adding ice brings out the tropical rum notes.
- Suntory Hibiki is a very approachable smooth blend from Japan that you can score at Costco for ~$75 when they have it. Definitely recommend as an excellent starter whisky to anyone just getting their feet wet on the scene, but also pretty damn fine even for discerning palates.
- The Kirkland Signature Islay single malt is a fantastic deal on a very nice peaty Scotch. If you see it and you like it smokey, definitely pick it up!
- And Since that Yamazaki 12 that I do truly love has become so flippin' hard to find (or afford!), I find myself enjoying Nikka's Miyagikyo as well as the Kurayoshi 12 to get my single malt fix from Japan.
I like a lot of the Japanese whisky's, although it's unfortunate how expensive they've become! I scored my first Yamazaki 12 for $59 at Costco maaaany years ago. Nowadays the typical ask for the same is a ridiculous $200! The liquor guy at the Los Feliz Costco in Los Angeles noted that they still get the occasional allotment, but customers never see it because the employees buy it all up before the store opens. He wouldn't tell me what they're paying either!
Ultimatley, the best whisky is the one you're able to get in your glass , but the above list is more or less my standard cabinet these days.

My local grocery store has a nikka 'coffey' grain whisky. But at $80 a bottle, out of my price range currently.
