Wine cap bed
    #28269697 - 04/09/23 08:33 AM (9 months, 15 days ago)

In the spring of 2021 I started a small wine cap bed in my back yard. I had a small flush in 2022 and they were some of the best tasting mushrooms I’ve ever tried. I know that I need to add more wood chips to keep the bed going but I was wondering when the best time would be to do this…early spring or fall? I live in the upper Midwest and the snow just melted, so now might be a good time.  When I add more wood chips should they be pasteurized now that the bed is somewhat established? Also, should I mix up the existing wood chips with the new or just layer the new chips on top?

I recommend spawning/revitalizing a wine cap bed a month after the last frost. If you're a bit more up north (USA) I wouldn't think about making a wine cap bed after October.
Adding fine wood chips is good, though find and use straw if you can! Tilling the area is preferred especially when revitalizing a spent mushroom bed.

Thanks so much for the response. Would the straw need to be pasteurized?

No problem. And yes, absolutely. A good lime bath would help.

So would June/July be a bad time to start a wine cap bed in Central/Northern USA?

Not at all. I started my project in June and everything went well.

Has anyone tried to use the 5gl bucket tech with wine cap, button or portobello? If I was going to try, any suggestions what you'd do?

Thanks,

I say I don't know because I never grew wine cap before but am trying now but out side.  From reading, I came to the opinion that wine cap would not fruit with out soil and all that comes with soil.
Take it for what it is worth with my disclaimer in my first sentence.
Good luck

Yeah, as do they grow in singles the soil one's as do others seem to grow mostly in clusters...

don't overthink SRA.
beds can be made whenever, just don't let them dry out.
of course freezing temperatures are not ideal.

you can use straw or chips. don't bother pasteurizing.
they can be grown outside in buckets without a problem.

you can top up beds whenever you want, just know that they'll focus on colonizing rather than fruiting when you do.

the only downside to SRA is that they'll start popping up in every mushroom bed you have ...

With a few grams of colonized grain/sawdust, would I start by spawning some jars of similar material?

I inoculate with straw sawdust mix. Works like a charm. If you only have grains, I would spawn those grains to some straw buckets.

Do you have any cool pictures of your gourmet grows in bucket or other tek's?

first and last picture are from the beds in the garden. started out on course coco coir mulch, when that was almost depleted, I dumped the deciduous chips on top. the fall after, I had little fruits.
now I've more mushrooms than I can process so I leave them in the bed.

the bins are straw/sawdust spawn layered into mulch straight from the bag. SRA just loves it. I made these just a couple of months ago and they're already fruiting.
