Just got done pasteurizing some coir for my first ever subtropicalis grow, bag has been consolidsting for a couple weeks now and starting to color, spawn is a 50/50 mix of millet and wheat. I have about 4.25 lbs.

would you guys split it between two smaller totes and go lighter on the spawn @1:3 or do one bigger tote with a thicker sub, maybe at a tighter ratio?

Heres a pic, any thoughts from people more experienced with this species appreciated

Ime, they like a thinner substrate or higher surface to sub ratio, so I would split them in your scenario.

Sorry, I was thinking of Tamps, not Subtropicalis. Ignore me. I don't have enough Semp grows for a preference on these guys, yet.

I tend to do em in bigger tubs with thicker subs, though for a first time it’s not a bad idea to split the weight. Then all your eggs aren’t in one basket yknow. Frankly though they’ll work either way. For my first run I did several tubs at once and I’m glad I did cause a few of them didn’t make it. If I’d only done one perhaps I would’ve been left with nothing. Best of luck though! 1:3-1:4 is roughly what I’ve been doing, though I can’t speak to ratio outside of that as I’ve not deviated since I’m happy with my results and would rather focus on other things.

Verm cased bottles dropping spores. Going to get some prints. So when I harvest these do I need to recase, or just rehydrate and wait?

50:50 bottles looking good, too!

I third, beautiful! You can recase, I’ve been just been respreading the existing casing to cover the holes

Cool, I just spread the verm over the holes too. I’m really enjoying these. Fairly easy to grow, really good looking. I’m planning to try some this weekend. I hope they live up to all the good hype.

not even 48 hours. i am surprised.  thought they are slower than Cubensis? seems to be not the case with this culture then? or are they only slow in fruiting?
happy!!

Ready to harvest or wait, or just harvest certain ones?

I’ve been waiting till the caps turn a darker color generally, if it were me I’d wait a bit. Looks like some of those bigger ones are drying out a bit? I can’t really tell but if so I’d grab those at least. They look good though!

Mist and wait for the spores production.
They're beautiful, nice grow!

In my admittedly limited experience, they are not slow on agar, grain, or colonizing substrate. In fact they colonize quicker than cubes. It’s the waiting for pins, then waiting for them to mature that’s a real test of your patience. I have fully colonized bags that have been sitting for weeks. Almost gave up on them as failures. They are just now beginning to pin.

interesting. if i am not wrong, you case with vermiculite? can you elaborate your casing and at what point you apply it?
thank you

I’m currently experimenting with these, so I wouldn’t take my methods as anything other than that. My first attempt was using Muda bottles inoculated with LC. Once the bottles colonized 100% I tried multiple casing methods. Dry vermiculite about 1/8” thick then heavily misted, field capacity coir 1/4” thick, pasteurized 50:50 peat:verm with hydrated lime 1/8” thick. The verm bottles produced pretty well as the pictures posted indicate. The coir bottles have only fruited around the rim of the jar, none in the center, and all seem to be growing weird. I’ll grab a few pics in a minute. The 50:50 bottles are just now putting up fruit, and seem to be at least as good as the verm only bottles. I also have some bags and a shoebox inoculated with grain spawn. Two bags cased at 100% with field capacity coir, two bags and the shoebox cased with 50:50 mix. The two coir bags were done before my coir bottles fruited, and if I knew then I would likely have tried vermiculite for those. They are just now starting to show a pin or two, too early to tell if they will be mutants like the coir bottles. The 50:50 bags just got cased last night.

Edit for those pics:

All my coir bottles look like this.

The 50:50 bottles are starting to take off nicely.

So what is the consensus about casing vs not casing if they start pinning before you case?

I still case personally, I haven’t tried not casing them in that situation though so grain of salt. Though casing post pins didn’t harm them at all and good flushes still occurred. Would be an interesting side by side.
