Crikey! Great stuff.
North or South of the state? I spent a few hours out and about around Mt Wellington today but nothing as yet in my normal spots.

Gday
Went for a walk today in the south of the state after the rain.  Walked for a couple of hours and heaps of fungi around and got sick of looking at different types.
Was taking pictures with my son and didn't pic anything.
However, on return and review of said pictures these seemed to be coming close to what we might have been looking at.
Im a complete newb to tassie shrooms tbh.  Any advice gratefully received.

I took these at the end of the walk:

And one nice pic of a nice specimen.

You've got an Armillaria there

Thanks Blackninja. I found these in the north. We had lots of rain on Friday, and was only hoping for a few pins, so was pretty stoked to find so many mature specimens. Some of them were even waterlogged so I'm assuming they were there before Friday's rain...

Hey Everyone,

I’m SO happy to see this thread has started

I’ve never been hunting before, but am very excited to get out there amongst nature and see if Lady Luck is on my side. And even though I’ve been warned that the beginners phase of Shroom hunting may include hours of walking with no finds, my spirits won’t be dampened even if my clothes are.

Happy Hunting and I wish you all success.

Hey everyone, new hunter here

Just spent quite a while around fern tree at about 570-650m, to no avail.

Wondering if its because of location, elavation or just bad luck. any help would be appreciated.

Be patient, it is early days. We need some consistent rain and lower temps to really kick things off. Fern tree is also very popular and I tend to stay away.
I was still finding them until early July last year, there’s plenty of time.
Just remember not to just rip them out of the ground like a lot of folks do. Take a knife and cut them off, this way they’ll flush again.  I’ve been able to go back 3-4 times to the same patch in a season with careful collecting

Seen a little patch starting to fruit at sea level... not mature yet but give it a cold night and rain or two. Hopefully temps start to drop a little and we get a bit more rain.

Third Time Foraging Lucky Today.

Slim pickings but its a start!

Hopefully have enough for a hit in any case.

Place looked pretty dry still and I was positively sweating on the hunt so probably still too warm.

Still have a spot now!

Southern Tas 400m.

I am curious since I do not know much about mushrooms from your area of the world, what does elevation have to do with what you're finding?

I'm not an expert by any means but I assume it's just a hint for folk that it's still too warm for subs at sea level for the most part

Good stuff, that’ll certainly get you there!
They last well in the fridge for a few days.
Once dried, you’ll obviously need a lot more to achieve the same as fresh

Lower temp and precipitation levels which kick off fruiting. Early in the season we see subs higher up and then they appear lower down as the weather cools and rainfall increases

they do look like amanitas but i couldnt tell you from those pics if theyre the right :mushroom2: or wrong :poison: ones. also amanitas are way different than psilocybe, you'd want to look up how to properly prepare them. i think theres some useful info in one of the australian active threads. last years maybe? (might have actually been in victorian actives thread) or just search "fly agaric" and that'll set you in the right direction

Not trying to be rude by sating this, but that is definitely not my experience!!

Last season I found probably more than just about anyone else in the state (over 4000, and yes I counted them) and most came from spots I have picked for multiple seasons and for multiple flushes at each spot.

I pull and often re-plant the stubs or grow in cardboard.  I have created 2/3 new patches doing this!!

None showing at my spots as yet but most of my spots are close to sea level and require colder weather.
My usual indicator is when the wheat like grass disappears and is replaced by green grass!!

My experience is that the mycelium is short lived or at least plastic. I know patches that have disappeared over the years, and whether they got picked or not made no difference.

I also have found good healthy patches where there were none before.

In my opinion they are very adaptable.

Get some carboard with the wavy inside layer and pull off one outside layer and cur it into squares that fit into a medium snaplock.

Make the cardboard damp bit not soaking and place a couple of butts on the corrugated part, then place another piece on top with the flat facing the corrogations....repeat.

cut the corners off the snaplock, slide 4-5 layers inside and leave it a bathroom cupbooard for a weeks or two.

Then pull apart and plant!!!

Oh, and I have probably 20 friends I hunt for.  Some take for pleasure but most for medicinal/mental health reasons.

Went for a 30min hike up a fire trail near Hobart, only 300m up, and found 84g (wet). Big fruits too! Season has well and truely begun, especially with the big rain we had yesterday. Wish we had more light tonight as there were clusters and definitely more everywhere.

Happy hunting 😄 might see some of you out this weekend

Long time Lurker here.

With this beautiful temp drop had my first jaunt around ol' reliable yesterday.

Got too giddy to take take photo's while I was there - will do next time.

I also surprisingly found a decent amount of some that were waterlogged to the max. Perhaps they're been ready to go for a while?

Happy hunting xo

Hello.

From the north.

------

btw, I just wanted to apologize to those that have been waiting on me to make a beginners guide.  Due to some crap over the last few years, I haven't had the time or motivation to put something together, again sorry.  If I ever do make one (in the years to come) I'll definitely share it in the Tassie Active thread.

Here's two guides with great information that can help now for the newer members amongst you.

Hi,

I picked these today in hobart.  Still seems pretty slim pickings.  I was concerned about the two on the paper but they are staining blue so pretty confident now.

Thoughts and happy hunting!!

I’ve got some really good mycelium growing in between the cardboard!
How to plant? Just under the surface? What do you plant in?

Hello Fellow Hunters,
I went for a forage today and came across these beauties.
Posted an ID request earlier but to no avail.
Hoping I get more luck here in getting some clarity of what I’ve found.

Thanks in advance

Hello PhoenixMan.

I've circled the ones that I believe have a 50/50 chance of being a sub.  In saying that, I am not convinced that they are, but there's a chance.

To know for sure you will need to;

1 - Do a spore print on every one I've circled . This will need to be done every time you think you have found a potential sub, and helps when submitting any future ID request.
2 - See signs of blueing.  Not every magic mushroom will blue in the same way, and to make things more complicated, some won't stain blue at all.
3 - make a new id request with the spore print accompanying a new photo of each possible mushroom I've marked for you (if still possible).

It's possible that you may not get a spore print from the ones pictured (due to time passing), if not possible, then I recommend throwing them all away.

For next time, more photos will help. From the top, side and bottom for each mushroom is preferable, and don't forget spore prints for EACH one too.

Thanks Blessed 👍🏻

I have already disposed of them due to the feedback I got on my ID request post.
It’s all good, I got a bit excited actually finding some Shrooms even though they weren’t the type I was after.
Thanks for the extra info and advice 👍🏻👍🏻

Back to the bush I go 🏃🏻🏃🏻🏃🏻

37 grams dried so far (all from bush) and have found two new patches this season. Feeling quite pleased with myself. Really hoping my woodchip patches wake up soon. Might have to do a rain dance...

G'day legends,

I'm from North West Tassie and I'm just after a bit of advice of rough areas where to go for a forage this end of the state?

Complete understand everyone wanting to keep their spots to themselves I just want a rough area of where to go and start looking.

Happy to share my results and crop if I can get onto any Subs.

Cheers 🤙

Hi Guys

First time mushroom hunters here. We had great hike in North Tasmania and found these beauties. Can you help us to identify them and see if any of these should not be eaten?

Hey mate, I'd be careful with those. I'm not hugely experienced so I'd wait for another opinion.

Create a new ID request thread in the mushroom hunting and identification forum with more photos and info for a proper ID.

Cheers

I'm not an expert but please don't eat those. They look like pictures I've seen of a Tasmanian species of cortinarius:

Cortinarius Eartoxicus

Also a little similar to Galerina Patagonica

Again, I'm not an expert but I really hope you haven't eaten those! They seem very inconsistent with what I've seen.

I don’t think it’s just you.

I admittedly haven’t looked much but just from my comparison with past seasonal conditions and what I am seeing pop up in the funghi world where I am (rural - so you notice over a wider area) mush in general is harder to come by since mid-Autumn in southern Tasmania.

Before that we had a couple of rain dumps that brought things out early. Since then, not much at the right times/temps. Again, no expert but just my observations. I’ll probably go for a walk mid-week to have a look, but I’d say it’s been less than ideal (again, no expert here).

Hi Nev, I've had a pretty good season in the north and have found a few new patches but I have spent every spare second looking and have only totalled around 50 dried grams. I've noticed there have been way fewer posts on this thread compared to the previous years too. My huge woodchip patch from last year didn't fruit at all this year. Found these guys today in a different woodchip patch after telling myself the season was probably over...

Whereabouts (in general - I’d think regional areas of the state are fine rather than specifics)? More info specific for the season is great information long term on a resource like this. There is a distinct lack of rain in southern Tas this autumn - it’s cold but not rainy. No surprise with the predicted El Niño. So is this restricted to the north of the state?

Crappy year for me too so far - admittedly I haven't looked for any new spots and haven't been out to hunt specifically... But all of my usual spots are pretty dry, even after recent rains. These spots were PUMPING last year.. I was also falling over subs in all kinds of places last year and I'm struggling to see any this year.

This is only my third Tassie season, but is by far the worst so far. But I'm guessing these things go in cycles...

Ive started to get a bit of success the last couple weeks.

Given up on looking in Old Hobart Town and have found a few spots within an hour so all good.

Have done 10 + trips with only a couple singles really early on in the season.  Agree it has been really dry in the south so my logic was just to find the wet spots!!

It worked.  Here are my two last hunts worth.

Will slip out tomorrow for another run and see what has come up in the last week.

Hay All,

It's been pretty quiet on here for a while now i assume this is because of all of the other ID sites.

What are thoughts for the season, anyone still having any luck, should i venture out?

I've had a good run out of Hobart but has been really slow around Hobart and neither have yielded anything of note for around 6 weeks.

It has really seemed too dry tbh so interested in others thoughts.

Thanks for all the assistance to people who have contributed, this is where i've found most of my knowledge for a first hunting season!!

Thanks

I’d say this year is the worst for foraging I’ve seen since moving to the island in 2013. Sporadic rain that may have triggered fruiting in select areas at times but nothing like the usual consistency. Just my view. Others may vary.

The forum page will start soon, usually starts around late April when temps and rain are optimal.

Also I've seen you post on old season pages asking for people to guide you to spots to pick, etc, that's a real big no-no. Go scroll through guide posts on optimal forests, weather conditions for finding subs; do your own research. Don't be a dick and ask for someone to meet you in real life.
