Where to Grow Poppies * 1
    #28245070 - 03/24/23 05:25 PM (10 months, 1 hour ago)

So, a few years ago it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to start growing poppies, because I can't afford my heroin habit. I like to grow my own drugs, and I would love to grow some of these beautiful flowers!

I have considered growing them along the highways here in Michigan. Sowing the seeds in Spring, and hopefully harvesting in the Fall. Has anyone ever tried this? Any tips/pointers?

Thanks guys! :mushroom2:

Just my two cents but I’d look for someplace way more private. They know what’s up and if they aren’t eradicated in the first place you can absolutely get arrested harvesting poppy pods by the side of the highway.

Opium poppy and poppy straw are explicitly listed as schedule II substances in the federal controlled substances act along with the chemical derivatives of opium, and the exemptions for ornamental gardeners are basically just de facto exemptions; the government does not need to prove intent to misuse them to prosecute you for growing or possessing them. A DEA document as recent as 2019 insists that even the sole actual exemption allowing possession of poppy seeds does not extend to any substances contaminating unwashed seeds, meaning you can effectively still get busted just for having seeds if they’re found to have measurable quantities of opiates on them.

Turning high traffic public spaces into opium farms just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Edit: That said, I wish you luck in finding a safe and secluded site for a garden. I hope you can find a way to address the need that maximizes safety and minimizes suffering. Good luck!

Your well wishes are most welcome! ;-)

Ok, legal issues aside, is it possible to grow poppies with significant quantities of alkaloids in that sort of environment (ie - what I imagine to likely be poor soil conditions, and in a Northern state like Michigan?). I actually know a place a little ways off of the highway, that is quite secluded, that gets full sunlight, where I would like to grow them. I would very much love some stories from people who have actually successfully grown poppies, and produced their own opium or heroin from them. From what I understand, it's not beyond the realm of possibility to accomplish this.

Please don't answer if you do not know about the growing conditions of poppies. I am really looking for informed opinions. I have seen poppies growing in Eastern Oregon, which is quite far north.

Massachusetts here. I’ve grown poppies in what I would consider shit rocky sandy soil.
The soil was so shitty, I didn’t even have to weed it, because the only thing that grew there were the fresh poppy seeds I put there.

As far as highways go, I wouldn’t do that just because they mow that shit down with brush hogs and mowers a couple times a year.

Poppies can be grown in otherwise shitty soil though for sure.
I took down a ton of coniferous trees and shit a couple years ago on my property.
The soil was left sandy rocky and acidic from years of neglect, but that was the best year I ever had growing them.

Wow, first time I’ve seen proof of this. Great stuff pluviophile.

Hope everything works out for you Bigbad. Sorry I don’t have an answer… I’ve just been intrigued by this topic for a LONG time (probably after grilling my freshman biology teacher in college who said it was impossible) and always wondered why it doesn’t happen more often. Definitely won’t tell someone what they should do with their body, just be safe my friend…. Fucking fent is killing far too many these days.

Wow, good reading there! Guess I haven’t used the Search tool enough. Wish I had access to something this a couple decades back to prove some people wrong.

Just a pro-tip, because I've been using the shroomery for many years... Sometimes it's easier to use a search engine like duckduckgo, or google, and type in "shroomery" and then your keywords. The shroomery search engine isn't the best in the world, imo. Maybe I just haven't taken the time to figure it out very well.

Appreciate that tip my friend. And sorry once again for the intrusion without an answer to your question. I gave that up 10 years back but I’m still fascinated by the poppy. Surprised more people aren’t asking that same question like yourself.

There was a guy in Carolina that got busted with a whole field of poppies. He was a Chinese immigrant, I believe. He was processing them into dope too, I think lol. If I remember correctly, he had been doing it for years. He got busted for drug manufacturing. You can find an article about it on google.

Like someone above said, poppies grow best on shitty soil.
I got a big wild garden and the first year I had 100s (maybe 1000?) poppies.
The next year I had maybe 10? and those were the last.

Poppies don't like a mature soil with a lot of diversity.
This year I deliberately made some shitty patches for the poppies to grow and they seem to like it.

- Also you can't transplant poppies. Well maybe it would work in rare cases.
- The little plants are really vulnerable when it comes to hard rain.
- They don't do well in pots. Even in big pots I had tiny poppies.
- They do well with debris in the form of stones and bricks.
- Sandy soil
- Lot's of sun but also some protection.
- Make sure you don't have too many plants because they will stay very small.

In the past I've sown them at the edges of corn fields with success.
