Any runner up companies?

I haven't bought from any others, I like North Spores site and they seem to have everything.  I don't like to recommend folks I haven't bought from, but I think they'd probably be a good option.  Price seem a bit high though, my advice would be to run through the trusted vendors tab and find someone whose price and options seems ideal to you.

You think so?

I thought that for a little bit but it’s been growing pretty good. I mixed them at about 20% one week ago and in a week exploded to nearly to 100%. They recovered in about 24 hours or less. I have read that if they are bacterial that they either don’t spring back or take a long time to grow.

Not sure how accurate that is but It’s my first time. Idk if that timeline of how it grew makes a difference as being bacterial or not but just wanted to add that to see what u think

Hey Screwup, you can totally put mushroom flesh straight to grain, but it needs to be the same quality of tissue you’d put to agar. The flesh will revert to mycelium and colonize grain. I have done this many times.

What I really wanted was all the spores to drop and germinate that way lmao. I guess I’d have to take the cap out so that didn’t just colonize over everything quicker.

Yeah, they seem pretty bacterial.  It's moreso about how they look, not their grow speed, though it does indicate some things.  So metabolites, consider metabolites blood.  It's produced from war.  The mycelium is at war, because there is a contaminant, and it must die.

With that said, I had a somewhat similar bag of 3lbs of millet.  I was able to get like 2-3 oz from it before trich claimed it.  So you might not be completely boned, but you're somewhat boned.  My advice is to grow more mushrooms, quicker than you planned on, I'd start this weekend or as soon as you can, because this hobby takes a while and not having mushrooms blows.

I appreciate your insight on this situation. Even if it is bacterial I have heard like with you that you can get some fruit from it. I plan to do it with the shoebox tek and one 2.5lbbag can do about 3 tubs if I’m going 1 myco quart (might be a little more) to 1qt coier, and 1 pint casing. It calls to make the sub a little dryer so do you think that would give it a little better chance?

I guess the worst I can do is spawn it and toss it if it starts to give an off putting Oder or looks bad.

For the first bag do you think this Friday would be enough time to spawn it in your opinion?

It is contaminated, that's not a question.  But yeah, you might get some fruits from that, it's not rare for bacterial tubs to put out.  You've got 2 options in my opinion.  1) do what you're planning, that's fine.  2) Just top fruit it.  Cut open the bag when the top is completely colonized, I'd throw about 1 inch of coir on top of the block of grain, and compress it (so it's 1in compressed).  This would be top fruiting your bag, and I think it has a higher potential for success than going to shoeboxes.

Shoeboxes = more mushrooms, less reliable
Top fruiting = less mushrooms, more reliable.

Still, 3 shoeboxes are more reliable than just one, so you might not be losing out on much going with 3 shoeboxes.  Really, I don't even know which option is best, since you have 3 shoeboxes maybe that decreases the probability that it doesn't work out.  I don't know, I haven't done either of these things, I've just top fruited jars and spawned bacterial shit enough times.  From that experience though I'm pretty unsure which would be the better route.

edit - I guess shoeboxes are easier to setup than some weird bag top fruiting method.  Probably just roll with them and hope that it works.  It probably will produce some mushrooms.

Okay awesome, I appreciate the tip if I fruit from the bag. I think the first bag will be done before I do the second bag. I guess what I could do is make 3 shoeboxes from my first bag. If it goes bad, then I could just fruit in the bag like you were recommending. If the second bag finishes before the first one either fails/starts to pin, do you think I could delay doing anything with it until I see what happens?

Also from one of your previous replies, I already have a backup plan. I am gathering all of the materials to make my own jar and I inoculated 10 agar plates about a week ago. I see growth on 5 of them with no contamination yet so I guess that is good. I think I will do at least 1 transfer before I move it to grain. I made the mistake of MSS to grain so I guess it’ll be interesting to experiment a little bit

Hey guys,

I inoculated these bags on 3/10 and I think they are nearing close to 100% (especially the first bag). I do have a few questions on the bags tho. On both bags I notice some metabolites are starting to form. I hear this is normal and there are some drops, not a whole puddle so I guess that is ok right? Also I notice on bag 1 that there are a few grains in the crease of the bag are uncolonized. I assume that if they are still like that when I spawn I can just throw them out?

Also for bag 2 I notice there are some areas that are not too colononized. I will admit I did not mix that bag the best and the uncolonized areas were a lot larger 4 days ago. Do you guys think it is looking good as it is not stopping and closing the spaces?

Lastly, how much longer do you think I have left till I can spaw? I think bag 1 is pretty close and bag 2 needs a bit more time. (Just for an fyi I think the condensation is from a 4F temp swing that can happen)

Any info would be most appreciated. Thank you!

Both of those bags look pretty bacterial to me.

They don't look perfect but I don't see anything screaming out at me, he'd probably get a first flush maybe...

That last one does have some uncolonized big areas though...

Will heavily bacterial/uncolonized grains always lead to mold once fruited?

Standard sharpie in there for scale. Input would be much appreciated! My first grow, with APE none the less, but they seem to be turning out quite well.

It is normal for APE caps to turn blue look up "Starry Night" APES or SNAPES to see an extremely blue cap phenotype -- nothing wrong with it!

I will admit that bag had a bit less colonized spawn in it than the other. I don’t think I mixed it up too well. I guess I will see in the next few days what happens. The bare spot on the back was a lot larger 4 days ago when I checked, and is now less than half the original size now.

No, all 3 parts stay separate.

When you don't invert the lid, the SFD can stick to it, if you cranked it down tight and it's been a couple weeks.

The fruits will start to bruise as the cap breaks and cracks from getting too mature (personal preference).

Dark caps would usually be aborts if you are growing APE. I have not grown Starry Night so I don't have any first hand experience to draw from but I have grown plenty of APE.

Edit: To address the first post that I quoted I would say you are experiencing bruising from over misting. Those fruits are drenched.

I think you could go positively forward with an intention of a ok first flush, with a nice thin suedo casing, just make sure your tub tek is clean and all your moving air is ceased and your clean when you add your coir and grain together then definately don't open up your lid..

Good luck...
