Posts can be voted up, why not down too?

Sometimes it's really really hard to politely tell someone:
"Hey I think your reply is low quality and I dont have the effort to engage in conversation with you"

In fact Ive seen people try that in threads here before and then a shitstorm would ensue. I dont have a shitstorm proofed house, or patience like that.

Thanks for your time.

What are your thoughts on how a down vote function should be implemented?
What I mean by that is do you think that a down vote should counter an upvote or do you think there should be something else done different?

People like to use downvoting to say, not only do I not like your posts, I don’t want other people to engage with it or even see it.

This is not reddit. If a post receives a lot of down votes it's unlikely that it will be hidden. I don't think the pattern you describe will transfer to the Shroomery.

You’re right about that..
I think then that I misunderstood about OPs statement that posts could be voted up. It’s not really voting a post up as much as it is giving it a thumbs up. There is no vote causing a change in priority of posts.. what would then be the point of a thumbs down? That’s what replies are for.

I think it should be like YouTube.  Counter for both ups and downs.

I believe it would actually be most useful in the cult area, where there are some TCs that are openly denounced [such as violet]. Yet their [bad] teks still remain up and are easy for noobs to misunderstand as good info. Yes, people can also simply say "this is bad info." But people already do that all over the place here, and it also seems to be shitstorm attractant when they do.

Everything is linear here and not algorithmically boosted, so it doesn't help comment ranking or anything. It would just turn into something petty, and doesn't serve a purpose beyond being a general fuck you button.

I would love to see this implemented so that useful responses could be supported by the community and poor responses could be publicly shamed (sorry, but sometimes it's needed).  There would initially be lots of butthurt going on but it would be worth it to have a group consensus on responses for new growers so they can see where the community lies on the subject at hand instead of only the people that decided to respond that happen to be the loudest.  Overgrow had a karma system for this that worked quite well.

I think a simple Ups and Downs counter would be a little less humiliating for people than the dogpiles of graems.

It never turned into a dogpile situation unless someone was just giving out horrific advice.  Probably 95+% of the feedback were constructive thumps ups to let everyone know they agreed with the poster.

Nah, not you...just a general thing that would keep the forums less cluttered.  Editted that out for you OP

Oh ok. No offense, but maybe make your own thread with said request? Ive seen admins address good ideas here before.

For example, the reasons for bans listed on profiles, that came from a request here

Maybe for growing advice but then what about political opinions? What about types of speech?

We dont need to be training eachother how to speak and which words to use

Are they being voted up?
Or are they being thumbs upd?
Does your upvote effect post priority or just express your opinion?

I think it should be like YouTube.  Counter for both ups and downs.

It's funny, so far all the criticism to this idea also applies to the up-voting feature.

It's definitely more useful in the cult related areas of the forum.  Even just a simple up/down would probably help alot of the newer growers figure out which responses they should pay more attention to and which ones are probably less useful.  Having 4 upvotes and 3 downvotes on a post tells you alot more than just seeing the 4 upvotes a post would have in the current setup.  IMO votes shouldn't effects posts other than show public opinon.

exactly.

+ = “I like this”
Not “this is correct”

We have enough of people expressing how much they don’t like something by responding to it in comments. Downvoting for correctness or populism is going to allow for brigading.

This isn't a community, though. It's an online free-for-all. Literally anyone can create an account, or multiple accounts, and game the system any which way. As such, there is no "consensus" on best practices. If my opinions align with someone else's, it's probably got more to do with our real-life experiences aligning than anything else. There's no council making determinations about the current state of the art here. I guess you could say that the "start here" posts, teks, and stickies could represent that to some extent, but it's more about anticipating the missteps that most people make when starting out. Also, a lot of us, myself included, have nothing to do with any of that.

Communities, or, really, associations, form and dissolve over time here as posters link up and exchange ideas, then eventually move on. But there's always examples of absolute shitshows out there, too.

It takes work and reading comprehension to get through things here, and I'm OK with that. Very few posts are absolute garbage. Violet is a great example of someone who rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, but still wasn't out there spouting absolute bullshit. There's value in digesting these things for yourself, and not using the quick shortcut of seeing which way the gladiatorial forum voted.

Older posts should be seen as a part of the scientific and historical literature. I don't need to go back and downvote Johannes Kepler for not getting planetary motion 100% right. Nor do I need to tell others that he didn't know what the fuck he was talking about, and to ignore his work. Even if that would make it 0.5% easier for someone to learn the physics they need to program a satellite.

Beware of advice- even this.
