Psilocybe baeocystis confirmed in North Carolina and New Hampshire 5

New DNA barcoding results are in - Psilocybe baeocystis has been confirmed in North Carolina. A 100% match with three west coast ITS sequences - and a Psilocybe fasciata sequence from Japan.
Either that sequence is misnamed and Psilocybe fasciata is a different species that occurs in Japan, or it is named correctly and Psilocybe fasciata is a synonym of Psilocybe baeocystis.
Guzman synonymized Psilocybe fasciata with the older name Psilocybe venenata, and if this was synonymized correctly, the oldest and therefore most correct name for Psilocybe baeocystis is P. venenata. Microscopic descriptions and drawings in The Genus Psilocybe for Psilocybe baeocystis, P. fasciata and P. venenata point towards them likely being the same species.

Is this all natural or from grows which went rogue?

I would expect them to be naturally occurring, doesn't seem to be a widely cultivated species.

Probably natural because it also turned up in New Hampshire and it's not a commonly cultivated species.

I wonder if there’s certain layers of earth where the spores lay dormant before being revealed by rain erosion‽

This thread made my day twice now lol.
I have an old guide for Eastern US(Alan and Arlene Bessette I believe) that lists Baeocystis as present in the NE, but I figured it was dated taxonomy(probably still is) but a man can dream. This is fkn awesome.

Hi Allan, I am trying to ID a find from a pot plant (NZ) and the closest images I can find to ID this are coming up as Ps baeocystis. Keen to know if you concur? the tiny pins in the pot look exactly like the ones on the wiki LOL

Psilocybe baeocystis probably doesn't occur in NZ. There are a few Psilocybe that can occur in plant pots and look similar, some don't have names yet.

Fascinating, I wonder the same. The unknown in the fungi world has made me forget about exploring space… we have enough to discover right here. No rocket necessary.
