Casing Step Clarification
    #2824799 - 06/24/04 04:18 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Hello everyone.  A quick question on simple casing here.  The "Simple Casing" tek says:
"Follow PF Tek or MMGG method until you have a fully colonized
    cake.
Wet vermiculite and put in sterilizing container, sterilize and let cool.
Sterilize fruiting container and let cool.
Add 1/2" (1cm) or more vermiculite layer to bottom of fruiting
      container.
Crumble or leave cake whole over bottom layer.
Cover cake with damp, sterilized vermiculite (note: some
growers suggest leaving crumbled cake without casing until it starts
to grow mycelium again (24+ hours))
Cover fruiting container with foil or plastic wrap, poke holes in
      covering. Let stand."

OK, my question is: how does one sterilize the bottom layer of vermiculite?  Should I just PC a bunch of semi-moist (so it doesn't melt) vermiculite, put down a layer, crumble colonized substrate, and then cover with another layer of vermiculite, and then spray this?  What would be the best way to go about this?
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help on this one.

Dont forget to wet it thoroughly before you nuke it or you will have a meltdown. Killed a good piece of tupperware that way in the early days! Ha! Ha!

I think it is pretty convenient to just make up a big bowl of casing mix and fill up as many quart jars as you can fit into the pc and let em go at 15psi for about an hour. This way you have plenty of sterile casing material to use for a while.

Good Luck

all i do is spread wet verm out in a cookie sheet, cover with foil, and bake at 170 for 1 hour. Same as I do with casing, just make it field capacity wet with distilled water first. One can microwave, but I never tried it.

hah yeah I was microwaving some verm yesterday on a plate, I set the microwave for 10 mins and about 2 mins before the end I heard an almighty bang.... the plate had broken!! I too think 10 mins is abit excessive... 5 mins at the most should do it if you value your tupperware/plates.

Had you read this FAQ
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23373
you had known better....

"CAUTiON: Don't attempt to microwave dry vermiculite in a plastic dish. It will get very hot and melt it! Always wet the materials before microwaving! "
