I don't think it would take twice as long to colonize a pint jar over a 1/2 pint. Wouldn't the growth be exponential?

I think the biggest problem is areas left open for contamination for a longer period of time.

doc34, have a look at bacterial growth for example. That is exponential. Start off with 1, 1 becomes 2, 2 become 4, 4 become 8 etc. etc.

I would imagine the reason why pint jars take "twice" as long is that they dry out. If a way is found to provide them with sufficient moisture I would imagine the colonisation time would only be a few days longer.

^^^ agreed. I wasn't trying to say that the growth WAS exponential, being that it's not growing in a circle, rather within the confines of a jar. On agar I would assume to growth to be exponential, but inside the jars the fastest growing period would probably be just after germination, until the growth hits the edge of the jar.

At a guess I would say that if someone did a day by day comparison of a 1/2 pint and pint jar, the pint jar would actually have more mycelial (word?) growth at the early stages (more room to grow "exponentially"), but in finishing it would be slower.

BTW I'm not really arguing, just thinking aloud
