I'm afraid thats not going to be possible...There are several areas uncolonized. If it comes down to removing sections and putting them in smaller containers that is going to REALLY BLOW and ruin my ALREADY SHITTY DAY...sorry just venting.
Teragon,
I tried that and nothing came out, the reason is that the cake and compost is so compact that these areas are completely trapped in there. Help folks!

wait until the surface is 100% then transfer... i see your problem. you might condider early birth and then brand or cut off the uncol. parts (with sterile tools of course)

The yellow is mushroom shit, lower your temperature immediately. That is alot of compost and it is much hotter at the center of it then the surrounding environment. There is alot of condensation in the chamber also. To much water and to high temperatures. Fix, but be careful not to contaminate.

Yeah I wouldn't transfer. That would be very difficult unless you have a sterile room.

Thanks for your help while I was gone McMan :) Most everything you said is correct.
This problem was caused from to much heat. But not to worry HolyDiver, your project will still work fine.
We do see small pockets of this yellowing quite often and they fruit fine as you can see from all the pics.
Just let it ride... definatly drop your temps.
We recommend temps of no higher then 75F. The core of the compost will be a good 5-7degrees warmer.
Really, these kits should just be left at room temperature. Provided most ppl's house temps are kept from 70F-75F. At 70F they will do fine... maybe take a few days longer to colonize also less chances of the compost metabolizing to fast. As for the yellowing, think of it as more of compost tea from the compost metabolizing to fast from the high heat and to much water build up in those pockets. I"m sure many of you have seen this yellowing in jars from time to time as well when you see water droplets againts the glass in small pockets. Then when you birth then you just cut it off.
As for the air space... I think it is just from the picture that it appears more like a 2:1 ratio.
The kits are designed for 4" of compost in a 12.5" container, basically 3:1 ratio which works fine as you can see from all the pictures I post.
Just let it ride HolyDiver.. dont trasfer it. If it really looks bad... using good clean sterile hands, reach down there and pull some yellowish spots out if it really bothers you. Personally I think you should let it go. It will still fruit fine. Maybe not optimul but it will still fruit. I think you should just let it ride so we can all continue following this project and all the do's and donts of it :)
If for any reason this project is a comlete failure because I asked you to let it ride..... not to worry.... we'll take care of you for a new project.
I need to update some things on the website about some more things to look out for and prevent such as over heating.
Also while anyone is reading this... were changing the recommend spore water to each bag to only 5cc's per bag since several ppl are gettting wet spot bacteria from to much water in them. We cant reduce the water anymore in the grain or it will be to dry when cooked and do more damage then good.
This is the best way we learn to make these kits more and more user friendly is from your feedback. Thanks.

McMan, your diagnosis of the situation was right on...impressive! It seems that the heating pad was the problem. Even from the beginning though the bottom inch or so has shown no signs of activity at all.... I have removed heating pad at this point. Should I initiatate pinning at this point and suck up the loss of an inch of compost?
As far as the yellow spots: I shook the mass out of its sides and aired the container out and healthy white growth is back.
Ryche thanks for your response also.

So you left the overcooked 1" bottom layer in there right?
Thats ok if its on the bottom.
Wait until its 100% colonized.. then give it a few more days just to be sure... :) then initiate pinning. It will still be fine, even with 3 inches of healthy compost on top. you will still get some great flushes.
Just keep the project going and keep us posted so we can see how this turns out :) We'll work out something for you for another kit if it doesn't come out very good. I've updated the instructions on the website with "no heating pads" he he he
We didn't think of that since we dont use them.

LOL... your right... 2:1 ratio. But as you can see from all the pics I post its not needed, at least for cubensis, or some agaricus species. We've seen these mushrooms grow so large in these containers they push the lid open. .
This happens quite often. But we dont want to put them in a larger box because not all of the strains do this. And more air space may cause less humidity and require a humidifier then. Were going for a simple kit, yet effective kit.
Cubensis are the most forgiving species of mushrooms out there. They thrive to spread their seed and will take a beating. Look at all the neglect teks going around :)
