resurrecting lost cakes
    #2823595 - 06/24/04 09:25 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

I had a cake that was colonizing nicely until I spotted some green mold. Instead of just tossing the whole cake into the trash, I took it outside of my home to a patch of wood mulch and buried the cake (minus the small amount of green mold which I cut off of it and trashed).

this was 2 days ago, yesterday it rained, and today there's white mycelium growing sparsely across the top of the patch where I'd buried it. does anyone think it will grow? the temperatures get up to the mid to high 80s here during the hottest parts of the day and it never seems to drop below 70? during the summer.. I'm in southwestern VA if anyone is wondering.

I'm in Va as well and have done the same. I'm not an expert on growing but I had success with my molded cakes last year. This is what I did:
I cut out the mold, crumbled the cakes, mixed them with some verm. I put it outside in a shady patch then covered it with moist organic compost. I mist it now and again when it looks like its getting dryed out.
My recommendation would be to cover the myc. with some compost and keep moist.

Thanks for the response

It's looking good so far, I'm afraid to do much more to it because it's sort of sketchy looking.  The mulch is outside my window so I can basically look right at it, or go right outside my door and check it out.  Nobody ever pays attention to that area, but I'm afraid to draw any to it if I make any obvious changes to the mulch (such as adding vermiculite or anything like that).  I think I'm going to just watch it and see if it does anything.. if it doesn't, no huge loss.

almost ALWAYS mold=loss

however, SPENT cakes(as in, cakes no longer yeilding shroomage indoors but free of contaminates) can be put outside under ordinary top soil to yeild a few more soldiers...in some cases the BIGGEST ones of the harvest!!!

You are SO wrong. I've put moldy cakes outside many, many times and they fruit almost always. Mother Nature has a way of dealing with contams. It amazing, really. I always cut off what is visible and She takes care of the rest. So, you're either doing something wrong, or you don't know what you're talking about.

My patch looks fine right now, just some spindly looking mycelium on top of the mulch. I think I'm going to pour some water around and on it and maybe scrape some more mulch over it too.

any idea when I should start to expect fruits?
