Hague Invasion Act 1

It's kind of funny seeing people here talk about the ICC's arrest warrant for Putin. The United States has such contempt for the court, that we even have a law called:
Quote:
The American Service-Members' Protection Act, known informally as the Hague Invasion Act, is a United States federal law described as "a bill to protect United States military personnel and other elected and appointed officials of the United States government against criminal prosecution by an international criminal court to which the United States is not party."[1] The text of the Act has been codified as subchapter II of chapter 81 of title 22, United States Code.
If any of our people, or our allies are arrested on a warrant issued by the ICC, we reserve the right to invade Hague, and release that person/people.
Quote:
In the U.S. Senate, 30 Democrats and 45 Republicans voted to pass the bill.
The United States is not a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The Act authorizes the President of the United States to use "all means necessary and appropriate to bring about the release of any U.S. or allied personnel being detained or imprisoned by, on behalf of, or at the request of the International Criminal Court". This authorization led to the act being colloquially nicknamed "The Hague Invasion Act", as the act allows the President to order U.S. military action, such as an invasion of The Hague, where the ICC is located, to protect American officials and military personnel from prosecution or rescue them from custody.

You don't think the U.S. Government should protect its citizens from being held prisoner by other countries?

I didn't specify what I think, but now that you ask, I suppose it depends on the crimes they are guilty of, and the court that convicted them. If a US citizen murders someone in another country, they should stand trial in that country, and be imprisoned by that country.
From my limited knowledge of the ICC, it seems to me to be kind of a silly joke. I don't like the idea of any form of centralized power, so I don't really like the idea of this court. If they did actually have any power in the world, it would almost certainly be abused.

Should we invalidate all extradition treaties?
Similarly, should we expect the US government to protect us from foreign nationals that commit crimes on US soil? Wealthy Saudis are pretty notorious for coming over to the US, doing a bunch of bad shit, and then fleeing overseas.

The U.S. has extradition treaties with many countries, and those treaties exist because the U.S. has determined that they have at least a sufficient amount of due process to make their system fair.

So the US government believes that the ICC had not proven itself to be sufficiently fair?

The fact of the matter is, if the ICC were to arrest Putin on these grounds, they have at least the same, if not more justification for arresting many of the world's most powerful leaders, particularly in the United States.

Which is exactly why we didn’t want to present evidence for the supposed war crimes that Putin did.
They admit it.

The Putin indictment stands on its own. The fact that they haven’t gone after other leaders is irrelevant. Whataboutism is so fucking annoying

A court should be about justice, not politics. If this court means to be taken seriously, then they should go after all of the world leaders who commit war crimes. These include Netanyahu, Salman Al Saud, George W. Bush, Obama, etc.

Another ridiculous response.
Well, check this out: The ICC has no power, and Putin will not be arrested. It's a silly court, that has no business making these silly "judgements". So, it's a moot point.
Putin will not be arrested on this warrant. That's a plain fact.

Tell that to the other national leaders who ended up in custody. The ICC decision is a life altering event for Putin; who will never be able to travel to most other countries. He’s been sidelined from being an international player.
Funny how you want people prosecuted for war crimes and then call the organization that actually does a good job doing that “silly“

I dunno, if he loses the war, gets ousted from power and survives to live in exile, he might get arrested...or propped up as the opposition in exile to whatever government replaces his. Whichever best serves capital at the time.

Buddy your entire political ethos rests on supporting a party based on a single criteria: “the republicans are doing it too but even worse.”
Whataboutism is essential to you.

There are also a thing called a SOFA.... most SOFA agreements between the host country and the US gives the U.S. courts jurisdiction over crimes allegedly committed by a servicemember.
