Wasn't there overwhelming evidence that he was involved in the conspiracy to overthrow the US government, a coup attempt, and probable treason? Paying hush money to someone he had sex with seems like a big pile of nothing. That he is not already in prison now on the more serious charges is just an embarrassment.

He’s not being indicted for paying hush money. He’s being indicted for laundering that money through a third party and then falsifying business documents to hide that expense. If he paid the money out of his campaign cash and declared it, it would have been perfectly legal

The classified documents case is heating up. Prosecutors are now saying that Trump has been lying to his own lawyers who then file false affidavits. Last week his attorney was ordered to testify and stripped of lawyer client privilege.
https://news.yahoo.com/sources-special-counsel-claims-trump-221048707.html
Quote:
Prosecutors in the special counsel's office have presented compelling preliminary evidence that former President Donald Trump knowingly and deliberately misled his own attorneys about his retention of classified materials after leaving office, a former top federal judge wrote Friday in a sealed filing, according to sources who described its contents to ABC News.

Sure but tax evasion is something trump says in public that he’s proud of doing, we don’t really punish people for that anymore.

I’m being facetious (go figure), but white collar crime prosecutions have plummeted in the last couple decades, the IRS doesn’t have the resources to audit the ruling class (by design).
The point here is that they MIGHT get Trump on some stupid hooker payout a la Jerry Springer because they aren’t allowed to go after him on anything else.
“Hey they got Al Capone on tax evasion!” Yeah great that was a century ago and it only proves my point that the criminal Justice system is disempowered to prosecute the wealthy.

That's an oversimplification. First, there is no question that the wealthy do not commit as many crimes as the poor. Second, the kinds of crimes the wealthy commit are generally not violent crimes.
Obviously, we should prioritize violent crimes when choosing where to spend our law enforcement dollars. There are plenty of examples of wealthy people charged and convicted of violent crimes.
Yeah, in your cynical, commie mind, you see being the recipient of a proportionally larger share as being a high crime, but most people don't see the world like that. Stealing a million dollars is nowhere near as bad as killing someone, no matter how you look at it.

Per capita, that’s debatable. For example, wage theft in the US dwarfs all other forms of theft combined, yet wage theft isn’t even a crime.
In my cynical commie mind; poverty creates crime, our definition of crime is woefully inadequate, as is our definition of violent crime.

Not nearly enough. I don’t think any reasonable person would say our law enforcement system disproportionally targets the wealthy.

Not sure you get to defer to the common sentiment on crime when yesterday you were saying we have the system we have because most people are idiots.
Regardless, yeah, theft isn’t as bad as murder. But that theft begets poverty which begets other crimes such as murder. And then of course we have the law codified in a way that protects the ruling class. Trump won’t ever be held accountable for the murders he ordered abroad, or the ones he’s egged on domestically.
We have no problem making this leap of culpability when it comes to drug dealers whose products cause an OD, or burglary when an accomplice or bystander kills someone as a result of said burglary. We just don’t do it for the ruling class.
The law is codified in a way that protects the ruling class. So when you say “the poor are the ones doing the crimes,” well yeah no shit. We are again back at you arguing the ‘is’ and me arguing the ‘ought.’ I’d like to think that if we were both transported back in time 175 years neither of us would be arguing for the necessity of slave patrols and we’d both be arguing against the institution of slavery.

Hmm... Iiiinteresting...
What if stealing a million dollars makes someone kill themselves?
How about people's retirements being stolen by fraudulent grade A mortgage backed securities. Maybe not as bad as murder, but assault?
Also, drug crimes are probably the most commonly prosecuted crimes in America (I don't know that for sure, but it seems likely)... It seems to me that White Collar theft is more serious than drug usage.
