for me, drinking a drop of water causes an aberration of my consciousness.
i define inoxication as any substance, including food or water, that changes my consciousness from my known baseline pre ingestion!

but, isn't your consciousness in constant flux while it follows the familiar and balks at the unknown?

Follow up question: do some intoxications last longer than others?
I've noticed some love affairs with intoxication have different lifetimes. I have a buddy who used and sold cocaine for about 10 years back in the 90's. He loved the stuff. After nearly two decades of abstinence, he recently used cocaine at a party. He hated the feeling. What has changed?
Dunno. Maybe he found a new high that meets his needs more effectively. That's been the case for me in most circumstances.

For many years I hated the taste of green olives. I tried various types and found the flavor nasty. One day I ate a green olive and I liked it. I now eat green olives frequently. My buddy once enjoyed the feeling coke gave him, and now he dislikes the feeling. I'm always interested in examples that reveal our preferences are not necessarily permanent, and they often change.
I suspect a lot of anger and outrage (especially the type popular these days) is a form of self-cultivated intoxication. As I watch someone rant & rave, they appear to be intoxicated (under the influence of epinephrine & other drugs being secreted by the hypothalamus & pituitary gland). Often, I see a brief flash of a smile. It seems they are having a delirious fun time, like on a roller-coaster ride at the fair. Wheeeee!

Can't jealousy be intoxicating? To fill thigh gob upon the serpents of cane so sweet it were gold to our ancestors.
If one could build hours in between partakings, the effect would be moderation, theoretically at least.
I don't feel jealous because I love my independence atm and I don't want to be responsible for the emotional security of another person.

as an emotion, the limbic effects of jealousy are definitely intoxicating, but the valence of the experience of jealousy is often more towards pain than pleasure. Often it seems connected to shame as well, which may or may not be connected to guilt as well.

I've certainly felt jealous in a previous relationship, but being single, I don't feel possessive or entitled to anyone and I think that helps any form of jealousy to fizzle out with recognition of independence.
I think it even helps me to appreciate my first ex a bit more, when I can put jealousy aside and accept personal independence.
That took about 7 years of reflection to write too.

ha ha! 7 years, is too fast, ha ha - I don't think I will ever get over anything, but I had to find peace with not getting over it/them as well.
so many reflexes - astonishing really the ups the downs, the dead ends, and more.
