A problem after cooking
    #2823614 - 06/24/04 11:42 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I prepared some barley grain and packed them in jars and put on a lid with 5 holes and 2 filter papers ( under the lid and on the lid ) , then i wraped them all in aluminium foil and let it to cook ( using the fractional sterilization method ) . First day i didn't remove the foil and just let them stay so that bacteria can germinate , today , after 2nd sterilization process i removed the foil and found in there twice much water then it was before . The grain got bigger too so now it isn't 3/4 anymore , now it is like 4/4 of the jar ( completely full ) there is a risk of jars to explode if i let them like that in the final sterilization process  :mad2:

I got so pissed , damn it , like God cursed me with this shroom cultivation !!!

What the hell should i do now ? Should i risk opening the jars and removing some grain and geting the water out ? How to prevent that from hapening again after removing the water and some grain ???

I realy don't understand and i don't know what to do ...
:mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

You obviously need to start over and work on sealing your jars better with foil. I had a similar situation once when I pressure cooked some jars where the foil ran all the way down the side. When the PC cooled, the water was sucked up into the jars. They were full of water. Lesson learned, keep the foil high up on the jar...

You used much too much water in your pot. Don't use more than 2 cm of water in the pot, there is no need for the jars to be submerged.

What you can do now is:
Pour the grain in a strainer, let it drain for some 10 minutes, then fill the jars 2/3 full and sterilize again 2 or 3 times by boiling for an hour. DO NOT put more than 2 cm of water in the pot!

LOL , ha ha ha ... What an idiot i am

I filled the pot 1/2 with water . I can't belive what stupid mistake i did ...

Hey , anno , some of the barley started to crack and the white thing in it came out . I think someone told me that its not a very good idea to inoculate grain like that becose it makes a biger contam risk ... Is that truth ? ( i must say that i only saw few seeds that cracked , but after 3 more sterilization processes much more of them would crack ... )

What do you think ?

Yes, it is true. Rinse the grain with water before you put it into the jars.
