Anyone have experience with stealth camping?

I'm going out in europe with a friend of mine and we're staying in a campervan which is pretty stealthy. Any tips and tricks? I'm curious as to where I should park my van for the night but any anecdotes are welcome.

Hi, sounds like you don't want to use caravan sites with hundreds of campers? Me neither. In that case i would look for industrial areas where not much to nothing happens in the night. Ideally look out for truckers sleeping in their trucks. In that areas you won't be suspicious and mistaken for burglars or something. (Happened to me once, ended with a night in jail until an interpreter came in the morning and we could explain what we were doing in that small, very remote village in the middle of the night on a cow pasture. After that we were even brought back the 90km to our car.) In some countries like germany or the netherlands(expensive, 500€ fine per person if caught) it's forbidden to park and sleep just on the road and you would have to use a caravan site. But in reality even police wouldn't say anything against it as long you behave like civilized people. Just don't park in residential areas where the grandpas have nothing better to do than calling the cops on you. In belgium there are often free to use caravan sites in remote areas. Once used one of these and it was nice. Clean, nice people, even got invited for barbecue.
All in all i just can say look up what you are allowed in the coutry you are going to and especially what you must not do. Do it before crossing borders. Just as example in belgium and the netherlands you get in trouble for having pepper spray on you, while in germany you can buy and carry it as long you are 18 years old.
I hope that helps a little.

That was kinda my idea, to look for wherever truckers park for the night. I have worked as a mover before. We'll see, my issue is where I could leave the van over the day while looking around the cities. I suspect that it can be hard to get into the centrum from the industrial cites, but I guess we could just drive in and park for the day. Hopefully not to expensive. (The van can barely fit into a normal parking spot).
I can see how there can be misunderstandings, but as you say if you just behave decently you'll stay out of real trouble. Wild that you had to spend the night in jail though haha

Its easy, after the sun goes down, limit usage of lights, be quiet and sleep. Pack a pee bottle. Dont get out or in after you park. Have window covers. Sleep the point of it is to sleep. Then in the morning roll out. Try to park along side other cars. Drive a nicer car. The more outlandish or junky your car is the more you drive attention to it.

If for some reason the cops do knock or someone does in general. Just be pleasant person, and offer to leave if they are bothered by it. Say you didn't know its not okay, and youre just really tired on a trip with your buddy and couldnt find a place to stay for the night.

A nice legal trick in many countries is just being drunk - If someone complains that you park somewhere and sleep in your camper van you can just say "sorry officer, but I am drunk, I will just sleep for a few hours to be able to drive again"

Lookup the app iOverlander; I used it in America and it's pretty legit. Don't know about Europe. Found some beautiful places to see a sunrise/sunset without paying a cent!

Sure! Camp4night was also an app that helped us a lot. It shows parking spaces and has a lot of reviews.
