Negative past experiences with cannabis have traumatized me to the point where I don't know if I ever want to use psychedelics.
    #28220031 - 03/08/23 03:44 AM (10 months, 16 days ago)

I've spoken about my experiences with cannabis on this forum before.  For people who'd like to read in-depth explanations of why I've had such bad experiences with it, you can do so here and here

TL;DR I have a very low tolerance to weed, and my marijuana experience is strongly biased toward the negative effects of the drug, the worst of which I would describe as depersonalization, derealization, fear, paranoia, excessive heart rate, and perceived dehydration.

Although I have enjoyed mushrooms in the past, I'm very fearful to do them in the future due to the traumatic experiences I've had with marijuana. It's like I'm projecting my fear and my dislike of the marijuana high onto mushrooms. My powerful yet uncomfortable and very negative experiences with weed have made me scared to try larger doses of mushrooms or even try them at all. I had a conversation with a friend of mine the other day and I told him that I honestly could see myself never doing them ever again.

I don't know, I just have this anxiety and fear of tripping inside me that stems from my marijuana experiences, and I don't know how to properly process it. I'm just hoping that somebody here can offer me some wisdom or guidance to help me understand why I'm feeling this way.

I had this experience before more than 10yrs ago, I even suspect the weed was laced with something else. Anyway, I got in to a panic/anxiety attack and felt traumatized the following couple of weeks after the incident. i slowly picked up ganja again a few months afterwards that and got past all those negative experience. From then on after, I must say Im a regular consumer of cannabis and cannabis products. I think its important that you are in a good headspace before trying mushrooms, theyre really strong medicine.

Anyway, I never really had major problems with cannabis or mushrooms now, aside from maybe running out of it, but I get you.

So you want to try mushrooms but have a fear due to a bad trip on cannabis?

Not sure if I'm understanding you correctly. If you don't do either anymore then there's no need to fear them, right? Not trying to sound insensitive in any way. But when I've had a bad experience I usually just burn that bridge unless its vital for me to overcome that issues.

I never want to use cannabis again due to my overwhelmingly negative experiences with it.  That being said, I have used mushrooms in the past and have actually enjoyed the experience.  I'd like to be able to use them again for personal enlightenment, but my bad experiences with cannabis have made me deeply afraid of venturing back into a psychedelic state.  As of now, I don't know how to go forward with future psychedelic experiences due to the fear I still associate with cannabis.  I hope that makes things more clear.

In my experience cannabis and mushrooms are two totally different experiences. A couple hits of weed and my brain goes to some dark, weird fucking places that I can't always pull myself out of. The paranoia and thought loops are brutal.

With mushrooms, it can definitely be challenging but I never get the same piercing anxiety/derealization that weed can give me. I always feel more grounded with psychedelics than with weed, and even if I get anxious it's not the weird paranoia that comes with weed.

It also helps tremendously to have trip killers on hand. I've never used them and never plan to, but I'll always keep 100mg trazadone and 4mg Ativan handy, it gives tremendous peace of mind

It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in feeling this way.  Thank you for that.  I've heard of trip killers.  In fact, my friend tried to give me some Xanax back in 2017 when I was having an anxiety attack from just two hits of Durban Poison in Colorado. I got scared and didn't want to take it because I didn't like the idea of a second drug in my system.  I ultimately rode the high out, but I may have been better off after having taken that Xanax.

I do agree with you that cannabis and mushrooms are two totally different experiences.  I've been pondering whether or not I should take some truffle tea on an upcoming camping trip.  I may do so and take 1-2 grams.

Crystal clear... can you start out with mirodoses? Or do you maybe feel, for now, it's time for a break? That you may have learned what you need to and possibly give yourself time to process the enlightenment you've already received? I feel our minds can be very powerful with or without mushrooms.

Well, I haven't used mushrooms in any psychedelic form in maybe five years or so. Probably longer. I deeply respect the power of psychedelic mushrooms, so if I do them again, I would probably start with a low dose in the form of a tea. I would probably take either a gram or a gram and a half of dried truffles in tea form.

Was your negative experience from editables or smoking? Do you think that would make a difference?

Both.  My first negative experience was from smoking marijuana.  That being said, I have taken edibles before, and even at low doses, I found the effects to be very unenjoyable.  2017 was the last time I used edible.  I took a 5 mg gummy, and even that was too strong.  I wanted to jump out of the gondola in CO when it started to kick in.  I never would have guessed that 5 mg, half of a standard dose, would hit me that hard and for that long.

If I had to choose one, I would choose to smoke since I can actually titrate the dose, it has a shorter duration of action, and the peak effects don't last as long.  I have zero desire to ever ingest edible cannabis ever again.

I agree with the Feevers that psychedelics and cannabis are two totally different ballparks. I know a couple people who can handle heroic doses of mushrooms, are calm and collected on 5 hits of LSD, and yet almost always go into panic mode on cannabis. I don't really use a whole lot of marijuana myself for many years now.

For shrooms the potential for a bad trip is always there in some capacity, but I personally think there are some ways to reduce the chances of that happening. Obviously set and setting, being well rested and hydrated are huge, and I think getting adequate sleep prior to dosing is something a lot of people miss and a major cause for anxiety during a trip.

This might sound odd, but I've also noticed more anxiety during trips with acid reflux than without - so things like smoking, consuming too much food, consuming dairy and drinking acidic coffee are things I try to avoid during and leading up to any trip.

I also like making shroom tea with valerian root and chamomile. I personally think the combination of all three make for a pleasant, low anxiety trip every time in my experience.
