I've been having an incredibly difficult time controlling my appetite now that I've quite smoking.

Long story short, I quit smoking a few weeks ago.  It honestly wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.  The worst of the withdrawals were gone by day 6 or so.  What I will say is that nicotine is a hell of a drug when it comes to appetite suppression. It's honestly on par with amphetamines like Adderall or Vyvanse. I guess that makes sense considering nicotine is a stimulant.

I've been engaging in unhealthy food binges. I've been consuming way too much candy and fast food far more frequently than I'm comfortable with. I've gained about 3 to 4 pounds since I quit smoking, but I'm concerned that I will continue to gain more if I can't get my eating under control. I just think it's really strange how I'm at the point where I have zero cravings for nicotine, but those missing cravings have now been replaced with even more intense cravings for Chick-fil-A.

I guess I'm just looking for some advice on how to curb my eating binges and my unhealthy appetite.

First off, congratulations. That's huge.

I doubt your appetite is unhealthy, you're just not used to feeling it unsuppressed. Also, smoking is a pretty compulsive activity, so replacing it with compulsive eating is quite common. Stuffing yourself with fatty and sugary foods can also simulate the dopamine rush that you just gave up.

It seems to me that you need to find other compulsive activity to engage in, the trick is finding ones that are beneficial. Some sort of exercise seems like the best fit, you'll forget you're "starving" and get a nice hit of endorphins. And for most people, not a bad thing to get "addicted" to.

Fuck.  I just binge-ate again. I had a few drinks at the bar with my friends.  Then, I drove to Sheetz and bought an M&M ice cream sandwich, a pack of Reese's Cups, and a bag of chips.  I ate them all in a matter of a few minutes. I then drove from Sheetz directly to Denny's and ate a slam burger, fries, and a hot chocolate.  I feel like shit. :sad:

Sometimes it's the shame we are attracted to.  I have some notes on this from my therapist, but I can't find the remarks in my notebooks. 

Can you describe the discomfort you feel prior to a binge?  For many people, alcohol creates a combination of excitement and discomfort.  The discomfort can skyrocket when we stop drinking.

(Which is why some people drink till they drop)

I binge eat often I feel your pain:(
I've been doing it for years but stopped going to the gym a couple years ago.

Do you have Wendy's there?
My favorite is a triple baconator with large fries and a large pepsi(its an effing bucket basically)

Then smash it in my truck in the parking lot.
Note:you should tip the burger on its side and gently squeeze the burger about .5 of an Oz of grease will run out. (even I have my limits)

Also chicken fingers from the deli for the drive home from the grocery store.
Or
3 or 4 chocolate bars
Or
Eating cheese bars like a chocolate bars
Or
half a jar of Pb with a butter knife standing in the kitchen in the dark.
Or eating challenges at restaurants
Or
Eating bets with friends

Mine is addiction related.
I think. If I deny myself I get sad that I will never experience that burger or just one more scoop of Pb.
I think being really full of food makes me feel good. Or it has in the past.

I quit nicotine around 5 years ago. I've struggled with my weight ever since.

When smoking, I was a healthy 90kg. I'm on a diet at the moment and have come down to 105kg from 110kg. The craving for nicotine never goes away. If I don't keep up the exercise and discipline in eating smaller portions or less frequently, I can go up to 120kg.

In the first few months that I quit nicotine, I figured that a few extra "snacks" over the course of a day was better than smoking. But when I tipped the scale at 120kg I thought I'd rather be a smoker than fat.

try to exercise!

when I quit smoking I began to walk, run, and exercise which helped my brain release natural feel good chems (dopamine, edocannabinoids, endogenous opiods), the exercise related high (runners high) took away any cravings I had for nicotine.

Well, that's normal because your body is quite literally resuming growth, from whatever point you started smoking.

Don't refuse to feed yourself. It will cause mental illness. You should eat fruit every 2 or 3 hours. If you experience health problems from eating fruit, then you are not doing something correctly, because I can literally do no exercise at all for years while eating mostly fruit and my mental and physical health don't decline. I mean, maybe I can't run for as long, etc. But no  significant health problems arise. This personal experience has led me to believe that unhealthy food is the #1 problem in the world today. Not drugs, or whatever.

People consuming unhealthy food. Not being lazy. It's eating unhealthy food.

Healthy food should be #1 priority. #2 should be building muscle, in my opinion. Muscle is #2 because there will always be a significant level of strength/muscle by default with or without exercise due to actually growing properly while eating healthy. Muscle isn't pretty much literally required like healthy food because there are a significant amount of people and/or bodybuilders who either aren't eating properly; are trying to overload on the protein and build muscle fast, because they didn't build any muscle for the first 14 years of their lives, and their body was not meant to experience what they're putting it through, at any level, so they're getting prostate cancer and heart problems in their early 40's and dying by the lot.

They probably don't think much of fruit. They probably think it "just doesn't fill you up"... but if fruit isn't good enough, that's ok, you don't have to trust in it, but it is a simple fact that Arnold Schwarzenegger (the man himself) said that him claiming to eat meat/steak was just an advertisement/sales gimmick. I'm sure Arnold is intelligent enough to know how important fruit is. Also, an entire NFL football team didn't eat meat, and instead focused on healthy stuff like fruit, and they played better than they ever have. A woman who did as much said it turned her into a machine and she had never felt so strong and healthy.

We can never control our appetites.  Trying to "control" or subdue our urges and desires only makes them stronger.  All we can do is decide to make changes in our behaviors and to make different choices.  While engaging in eating binges, notice how pleasure plumets and the more you eat the worse you feel.  I feel zero pleasure as I'm finishing an entire carton of ice-cream.
