Losing humidity fast... no idea what to do
    #2821968 - 06/23/04 08:24 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Currently a FOAF has a terrarium with a non-evaporative cool mist humidifier. They are connected with hoses. This morning the terrarium was wet from being sprayed down and is now completely dry. What gives? Tried putting the humidifier in the terrarium and closing the lid, well see how that goes. Any suggestions?

what you have to understand is you can have high humidity WITHOUT water drops on the sides of your terrarium....too many ppl think you HAVE to have this for your terrarium to be at the right humidity level...what causes the drops is a difference in temperature between inside and outside of the chamber not just high humidity

You might want to try investing in a hygrometer. You can get a decent one at Walmart for 12 bucks. Just an idea.

well, i sprayed water in the terrarium this morning. all that water evaporated by afternoon. Plus all the cakes have dried out. i sprayed them with water just now to re hydrate them.
I have 1 hole in the bottom of the terraurium for exaust/drain. The hole is about the size of a penny.
also, over a period of 20 hours, the humidifier went through 1/10 of the tank (tank is supposed to be 24hrs)
what do you think?

Just so you know I've never seen a cool mist keep the humidity up in the 90s by itself. Esp on hot days. I think your finding the same thing.

I believe the humidifier is 24hours if runnin steady....since I assume you have yours on a timer to run ever so often then that is most likely the reason for only using up 1/10 of the tank

Is a layer of perlite enough to keep the humidity at the correct level or is misting also required?

Well i added a inch or so layer of perlite at the bottom of my terrarium. The cool mist is running 24/7 for gas exchange and humidity purposes, i hope the perlite is adding enough humidity. I have a fish tank heater submersed in a orange juice bottle that is providing considerable amounts of heat. Temps are in the high 70's inside the terrarrium and 50-60's outside temp. It tends to drop to mid 30's at night here but the fish tank heater is working well. Thanks for the tips!
