Need ID for possible cubes
    #2821925 - 06/23/04 08:10 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

It rained quite a bit yesterday and so a friend and i decided to go hunting today. We were fairly successful (we think) but just need to make sure we got what we think we did.
The first picture and second pictures are of all but 3 caps which are in the process of printing spores. The last picture is of 3 musrooms that are white, but were growing from cow patties and bruise blue. The gills are dark colored. There isnt a spore print ready yet.
All of the musrhooms (except for the white ones) are tan to golden in color. They have skinny stems that are hollow from the best i can tell. The gills are all dark colored. They smell like fungus, kind of pleasent. I am fairly sure some of these are cubes but i have my doubts on others (especially the white ones). The white oones have the same characteristics as the other ones, except they were white. All were picked from cow patties. Since my scale is on the way, could anyone give me an estimate to how much these all weigh? Thanks.

Not the right way to ask for an id but I think those are all some kind of panaeolus except for the top cap in pics 1 & 2. Bad pics and poor description, friend.

Read this for some pointers in posting for an ID

The spore print is done and here are the results. The one on the left (which i think is a cube) the results turned out dark purpleish. The on in the middle turned out brownish. The white one on the right turned out blue green. I forgot to add that i am in lower alabama. Sorry about the crappy picture, i cant find my personal cmaera and i am using a friends. Any help is appreciated.

my opinion. Give better data next time. (damn, have I turned into an asshole or what?)
but yes, I'd agree that the one seems to be a cube.

You have a mixed collection of mushrooms.
=meaning, more than one species in the photograph.

It looks like you the non-active Panaeolus campanulatus, the non-active Panaeolus antillarum (in the bottom [3rd] picture), and a slight possibility of 1 Psilocybe cubensis cap (the golden one) in there too.

But the picture is all mixed up as are the mushrooms.
-and i am not certain of that one cap being a Psilocybe cubensis.

Next time take better care in picking, handling, transporting and photographing of the mushrooms and then we can get you a relatively certain ID on these mushrooms. Otherwise, you just have a mixed-up bunch of mushrooms that no-one here could help you identify.

Good luck

You say it might be a Panaeolus antillarum but that has the same appearances as copelandia cyans except the cyans bruise blue. These did bruise blue i just wasnt sure. Think they were cyans?

Along with the pictures (if possible), please include the following:

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color (very important!)
g. Color that the mushroom bruises
h. Scent of mushroom

I live in southern alabama and it was picked straight from cow dung.
The rest is by memory-
The gills were black. I cant measure the stem anymore, but it was semi hollow and greyish white and i think it was hollow. The cap was white, with little cuts on the side and they were shaped like umbrellas. When i pinched the cap it bruised dark blue. And it smelled like... fungus. I cant explain it. Thanks

they could be cyans then but your pics do look like an assortment of types. I'd say the 3 together might be copelandia cyanescens but not the rest.

Sorry i forgot to mention those are the ones i was talking about. Yeah i thought there was an assortment. A lot of the grey ones are growing and i am just wondering what they are. They have the same features as all the rest but they are just dark grey or brown. They are more like the cyans but are bell shaped.

Pan campanulatus probably. nothing...
I'm going on the color mainly but they could be about anything. It takes alot to make a positive id.

I was just reading about Pan campanulatus and read they contain psilocybin-- how do i know when they are active if they do contain it because they are everywhere?

those aren't strong enough to eat though. Please stick with the cubensis till you're adept enough to id the copelandias. We can't make a positive id with the info you give us. I can't be positive those 3 are cyans although I'm pretty sure. The cubensis is the easiest to id and there will soon be lots of them in lower al. Someone else might tell you otherwise but that's the best advice I can give ya. Good luck!
