Has anyone been through a state run detox before? Questions from the land of Oz
    #28218203 - 03/06/23 10:47 PM (10 months, 17 days ago)

Hi all,

It’s been a while since I’ve posted and the reasons are based in progressive self destruction due to alcohol abuse (10-15 standard drinks, 7 days a week), on top of a coupled phobia of taking the fungi that have ever only loved me and opened my eyes and straightened me out. So yeah, no posting on shroomery. Just the drinking and endless YouTube and movies and weed and nothing but sitting on my arse. Let me get to the point before I drift off into a tangent:

Over the last month I’ve been in a solid GP. I’ve had multiple bloods drawn and everything seems straight down the line.  I shirked an ultrasound on my liver due to expense, but it’ll only tell me what the occasional pains do: scarring and the beginnings of cyrhossis. I’ve also gone through the initial consult for a state run (I’m Australian) local detox facility and today I got my intake date: march 24.

And I don’t even know that I need to be there. Or I ought to say I’m absolutely terrified of going through this.

Probably that’s the psychology of someone enmeshed with alcohol; the serpent wrapped around my life at present, rebelling from having its hold on me shaken. Telling me forget about it—that’s for people who can’t go a day without drinking before breakfast (and yes I’ve done that. Rarely, but it happens).Maybe it’s also in part my aversion to violence, loud disturbance, agressive behaviour etc and I’m frightened of going in there and encountering that. Or sleeping with someone coming off amphetamine and being assaulted or something.

There’s a lot going on and yes I know I need to ask questions of the people in that place. I’m just curious, desperately so, whether anyone in this community has experienced something similar, and if so would they be willing to lend their two cents of opinion or information.

In four days time I’ll decide again whether I can take the only thing that gave me 6 weeks alcohol free last year. I just keep defeating myself and listening to anxiety.
Anyhow apologies for the rant. I’d appreciate anything from those who know and don’t judge.

Bummer you can’t just manage drink less. Self decided actions lead to results. Your actions must be to these results or results not be as there are.

Bummer you cannot maintain a basic hold on English grammar, nor commit to the single requirement inherit in the original post “those who know and don’t judge.”

But thank you.

I'm not from Oz so I don't know how your health care system works. Is there actually the possibility of sleeping with addicts or being assaulted? Or is this irrational?

I'm not even sure how it works in Canada. But I believe they are a safe environment.

I was in the local hospital for 2 weeks to dry out and untangle the mess I made of my consciousness. And never felt unsafe. And I'm not social enough to worry about "hooking up" with anyone.

As far as needing addiction help you certainly do. I can't moderate any substance I take.

It's weird. Like if it's acceptable to consume
A substance on Friday night why not Wednesday or Monday. If it's ok after dinner why not after lunch.

When I can't determine when it's acceptable I feel Ike is always acceptable.

Hard to explain. I'm addict who is between drugs. Well other than pot.

And one of my biggest fears is trying a new substance cuz I don't know how bad it will grip me.

I know I need addiction help but sobriety sucked

THC is my favourite antidepressant so far.

Dude just go for it. Alcohol is aweful. Are you looking at full sobriety, quitting alcohol only, harm reduction.

Also my addiction counseling just wasn't quite the right fit. I have 3 full service addiction Treatment services available locally. I should have asked to talk to someone else maybe. I dunno.

Is the detox volunteer once you check in? Or can you leave anytime?

The emergency room doc tried to send me home with agreement I would arrange to come back on my own.

I cried and said no 🥴 I need to stay.

Though I was there for more than addiction.

The hardest part of taking a cold shower is getting in.  Once you get into the flow of things, your physical and mental state will improve.  You have the opportunity to stop the downward spiral of alcoholism.  If 10-15 daily drinks are wreaking havoc on you now, imagine how your body will fare once you're up to 20 per day.  My friend was drinking a 24-pack of beer every day up until the morning he was incarcerated.

I can relate.  It's easy to get stuck in a rut.

Have you uncovered what you view as benefits of engaging in this behavior?

We choose to do this because we believe there are benefits.

Thank you all for the gracious replies.

As for what I might perceive as benefits it’s hard to know this far along. I guess alcohol shuts down the “I’m alone almost every night and that sucks”, along with probably the underlying existential stuff (despite native intelligence and some talents I have repeatedly settled for the lowest/easiest I can do due to fear of failure). I haven’t been creative in a long time since the end of my last romantic relationship. I’ve just been destroying myself.

So I’m scared of failing detox too and the alcoholic in me is throwing out any justification to avoid it.

I took the scheduled week off work so that parts done. And I guess Abombs you set me a little more at ease—I am averse to violent people whatever their stripe.

From what I know the detox intake IS voluntary, so I can leave if it gets to much (but that’d be failure again)

Meanwhile I did a slightly dangerous thing last night and probably only had three-four standard drinks. And oh boy was I anxious. Got maybe four hours sleep but I feel super alert today.

Just honestly thanks. I NEED this drug out of my life. It’s kept me blind to everything I really want, ruined relationships, taken so much money and health.

I have to keep reminding myself of what’s at stake. A repeat of the last…many years albeit at differing levels of destruction is not worth repeating. Not if I want to struggle on and TRY to rebuild my life.

That task feels so hard that part of me thinks “what’s the point?”

The point is me. And I have to feel like I’m worth the trying.

I am aweful at words. So I hope someone else has words of encouragement.

Kicking alcohol is worth it. You. Just need to understand you are worth it

I was drinking 20 plus drinks a day. Shakes like mad when try to quit. Got self to gym and exercised weight lifting for three hours and the shakes were gone just like that.  For real. I couldn’t hold a drink to lips without spilling. Getting a grip of yourself much so seen to my experience as a good day at gym.

Try that.

Gyms alone promote well health.

Though if have no gym routine that maybe issue. Though I would see if one wanted to get those shakes and physical withdrawal gone with their addiction, I so gladly give aid to gym routine. For wonder if works for others as they in different scenarios to those much too much consumed drinks.

Quitting affects everyone differently. Don't assume hitting the gym a couple of times while detoxing will cure you. Sounds aweful actually.

I do believe you did it like that. I know of people who seem to detox easy. But not everyone is that lucky.
