I recently quit nicotine. Looking for some support. * 2
    #28206003 - 02/26/23 07:34 PM (10 months, 25 days ago)

I threw my Elf Bar vape away about 10 days ago.  The first three days without nicotine weren't as bad as I thought, but day 4-8 was much harder than I expected. I had a lot of cravings, and I finally feel like it's getting easier.  I went to a bar with friends last night, and I was around a lot of people smoking cigs, and I only had a mild craving to ask for one once.

I feel proud of myself for staying clean for 10 days, but I also am ashamed I started smoking again after 5 years of being off nicotine entirely.

Does anyone here have some advice for me?  I think smoking is cool, but I don't ever want to pick a cig up again.  I think back to my smoking days in a fond way, but I know that I can never go back there

When I stopped smoking cigarettes a change of routine was what helped me the most, I believe. 10 Years no cigarettes so far and I don't intend to pick it up again.

I too sometimes still think fondly of smoking one though, but in the end there's no benefit whatsoever in actually doing it.

Well done for getting through 10 days of not smoking. The cravings will be a thing of the past soon.

Finding a hobby or activity to substitute is a good idea. Preferably something constructive.

A lot of the time, people are more addicted to ritual than to the actual chemical.

I'm nicotine free for the better part of a year and a half, whenever I slip up, I'm left peripherally moody for 3 or 4 days. Not worth the 5 minutes of feeling fancy free IMO.

Also the savings you could probably do a whole vacation in no time just from quitting

Smoking will make it so you can't endure things like walking up steps

CONGRATULATIONS:birthday:
Smoking IS cool, until it's not.

Firstly, you should feel good/proud about no longer perpetuating the use of 'disposable' vapes!

Always seeing those spent little Elf bars and their parts littering most every nook and cranny of my hometown, it's fucking disgusting.
It's an epidemic that seems like is getting outta control.

Second, as a combo of FridgeDoor and jack_straws advice: find some sort of routine change that will take your mind off the ritual aspect.

I'm not going to "mind over matter" you (and I'm just trying to speak from personal experience to relate to you) but the trickiest aspect for me was the psychological need for soothing social anxiety etc- that far exceeded the 'withdrawals'.

Woke up? Roll and smoke somethin.
Waiting on friends? Roll and smoke somethin.
Had some lunch? Roll and smoke somethin.
Ad-break on an episode? Roll and smoke somethin.
Just about to go back to work? Roll and smoke somethin.
Gonna do fucking anything... You get my jist.

My experience quitting,
I was a round-the-clock spliff & hand rolled cig smoker for about 8 years and the amount I was hooked on the ritual beyond the act surprised me, I was rolling zoots for my mates for ages to get my "fix" and just not smoking on them
Gladly never touched a lick of nic since 2019 now and the benefits have kept me off it.

Circulation problems are what finally got me to quit tobacco/nicotine.
Not only with erectile health becoming diminished from so much (in this case, often unfiltered, so keep that in mind) tobacco use but I'd noticed definite problems with my hands/fingers when it came to playing instruments that could only be attributed to circulatory problems starting to manifest...

This is all before you consider all the other general health problems that can arise with extended nicotine abuse on your lungs, heart, guts, mental health the list goes on.

All that to say, your best bet for support is just being HONEST with yourself the pros and cons of how smoking affected your life: only you know the true effects it was having on you.

Oh and try to only allow any shame (around restarting briefly after so long off them) to guide you in your abstinance from cigs, cos if you're too tough on yourself with that ol' whip you may end up back at square one.

I'll often romanticise making a nice big spliff but I doubt it'd be a nice as I remember...:rasta:
(Worth adding I regularly use a dry herb vape on the eves/weekends, with little to no ill health effects. But I have just replaced some of my ritual habit with another. Don't wanna be a hypocrite)

TLDR;
Good luck with staying off 'em man, if you want to keep IT up- then KEEP IT UP! :penis:

Cheers!

Don't overeat, if you reach for snacks try to baby carrots which are sweet and can help with oral fixation.

Yeah, my appetite has been out of control since I quit. I am still dealing with a screwed-up sleep cycle.

Your poor suppressed appetite is just recovering,

As a former smoker some of my instant gratification motivations,

Lungs feel better, it's nice to have long deep breaths after swimming or exercise without the constriction I never knew was there.

Food tastes better, after all the tar works it way out olfactory and taste receptors just straight up work better, the hidden depth of a scratch made banana cream pie is completely buried in sweetness with all the inflammation, soot and extra mucus smoking causes.

Used to wake, smoke, eat breakfast, smoke, work, smoke, play, smoke.  Now the dirty lil habbit that used to be cool in the 50's isn't taking you out of moment, away from freinds family or segregating out your work day.

Nicotine fucked me up big time.

For some reason I let myself get addicted to the pouches, thinking this was better than vaping or smoking. Big NOPE...

After 3 months my hair started falling out and I had no idea why. It took me like 6 more months to realize it was the nicotine (I was doing like 50-100 mg of nicotine pouches/day) and by then the damage was done. I lost about 70% of my hair volume and I'm afraid it's still falling out despite the fact that I quit a few months ago. I may be forced to shave my head completely.

On top of that I believe it was causing some kind of neurological damage due to the high dosages. My arms/legs started twitching involuntarily quite often mostly when laying still. Sometimes I would twitch dozens of times in like 30 minutes.

It was scary and I figured I had to quit or it might actually kill me. Now the twitching has mostly stopped.

Stay away from nicotine unless you have the self control to be an occasional toker

That's insane.  I've never heard of this before. I'm definitely not having the same kind of cravings that I used to.  I'm also sleeping better.  This is why I refused to go down the nicotine replacement route.  It's just not worth it.  I'd rather just deal with the discomfort for a while.

Also:

1) See a neurologist about the twitching.  Even after you quit, there could be something more serious going on.  That's not normal, even on nicotine.

2) See a dermatologist about the hair loss.  Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, so I can see why it would cause it to fall out, but the degree of hair loss you describe is not normal.  Ask to be put on a drug called "Finasteride."  It's FDA-approved to treat hair loss.
