CD / HYSA
    #28211558 - 03/02/23 07:25 PM (10 months, 20 days ago)

Certificate of deposit and high yield savings account.

Any opinions?

I have some cash sitting in my bedroom that I don't plan on spending anytime soon.

Is it worth it to throw it into a CD? I know inflation is crazy. But wouldn't the interest earned be better than it just sitting in my room?

What about HYSA?

https://www.treasurydirect.gov/savings-bonds/i-bonds/

Set up an account at TreasuryDirect.gov, buy up to $10K/year worth of Series I bonds.  These adjust semi-annually to prevailing inflation, currently paying 6.89%.  Minimum one year lockup on initial investment, then if you cash out in less than 5 years, you forfeit the prior 3 months worth of accrued interest.  Cashing out after five years incurs no penalty, and the bond automatically cashes out its total accrued value at 30 years.  Interest is compounded semi-annually. Even if you cash out prior to 5 years and incur the 3 month interest penalty, these are worth it.  The best prevailing CD rates are currently around 4.5%.  Both the Series I and CD’s are government guaranteed and/or insured, so these are the lowest risk way to put idle cash to work, and the Series I offers the highest return doing so.

For more flexibility I go with high interest savings accounts. Shop around for rates. Take your money out whenever you want with no penalty.

I put a little in a CD just to do it.

And have been putting much more into an HYSA.

HYSA seems like a great way to make 4.5% on cash.

Still toying around with treasury stuff but hoping to learn more

Depends on your needs.  Probably obvious the HYSA has the advantage of being totally flexible.

CDs and I-bonds have been mentioned.  Those may get you a percent or two with the risk of locking up your money for a short period of time.  Personally, I don't do CDs and just stick with the HYSA.
