US Government is going to Elon Musk, on bended knees and hands
    #28209026 - 03/01/23 05:23 AM (10 months, 22 days ago)

I love it.  The government needs a private company to build the charging stations.

The intrastructure bill gave Tesla a $7.5 Billion subsidy.

This is proof positive.  Government can't do much WITHOUT private help.

:smug:

Then why do they go to private industries?

Fucking A!  Let's nationalize everything.

Why reinvent the wheel? That's much closer to what I see. The government doesn't need to create a CCC style program when Tesla already does this work and unemployment isn't an issue.

In this instance I don't follow the logic of spending money to create something that is already operating progressively and people are already working. Or why utilizing what is already in place is anything less than common sense management of the finances.

Maybe there's an issue with Tesla chargers I'm unaware of that needs to be addressed? This seems like it's a good move by the government for the infrastructure of the automotive industry at large? An industry which has been a cornerstone of American manufacturing for a long time.

Nahhh.  Just give private companies billion of taxpayer dollars.

We need an electric vehicle department.  Need a huge number of beuocrats and an Electric Vehicle Czar and a Charging Station Czar.

I'm lost on what you see as the role of government.

I want my taxpayer dollars to serve a function. But I don't think I have all the information in this regard. From what I can see though this use makes sense to me and will make the best use of taxpayer dollars to advance infrastructure that is lagging behind manufacturing and demand.

Without the governments involvement, why would Tesla feel any obligation to build infrastructure that helps the competition to not need to invest?

One of the richest companies on the planet needs government money to build charging stations for their own vehicles, and this is proof to you that the government needs Tesla? And not the other way around?

I don't think either one needs the other. But both are benefiting here it seems to me. That's usually the nature of business deals at scale.

Of all the shit I've seen my tax dollars go to I would have to say superchargers is the one of the more positive things I can remember .
I use them sometimes , I can't even describe the feeling of arrogant superiority you get when you're charging your car at one and there's a gas station across the street .

Personally, I like parking my EV at the pump so I can run in and grab a drink, use the bathroom, maybe take a short nap...

You mean like when people with gas cars park at the auto diesel pump and then I have to sit there and wait until they return?

At the one Sheetz (a large regional gas station here) the Super Chargers will have a line of like 10 cars waiting to get on. It's crazy. I am sure the gas station makes bank on those sales, especially because they have an extensive menu.

Exactly. But I was more referencing the trend of parking (usually pickup trucks) in front of Tesla chargers to prevent them from being used.

I guess Tesla drivers are treating the chargers as VIP parking spaces in a lot of places. I read an article about a guy who hooks up the charger to EVs that are parked blocking everyone else so they'll be charged some sort of fee.  I'm not really sure how that all works, tbh.

I mean, people use gas pumps as parking spaces too, inconsiderate assholes are...pretty common.

Probably a bit more common since EV chargers are relatively new and we haven't really come to a social understanding of how to use them.

Bit like when ecigs were first starting out, and there wasn't really a consensus on how to treat them. Now we have come to a general consensus at treat them largely like less gross cigarettes, with people being expected to go outside, and maybe to a smoking area, but when they first started out it was a shit show of people vaping in office buildings and such.

Oh, no doubt that people of all stripes are inconsiderate assholes.  It certainly isn't unique to EV drivers.  I just thought it was funny that someone else could cause you to incur fees.  Like, if I were parked at a pump, nobody could start pumping extra gas in my tank without paying for it themselves.

Well, that's mostly just a factor of how things are designed. I think if I was able to turn on a gas pump without paying up front/inserting a credit card, it would be possible to walk up to someone parked at the pump, put them pump I'm the trash, and start pumping. Then they would have to deal with an irate clerk.

Seems weird that Tesla chargers would not have a similar system, but I guess since they've implemented pay-by-car, it's a thing. If they ever implement pay by car for gas vehicles...

EV charging, much like hybrid only spots, are used to seperate out income gaps. Go to like an upscale live/work mall space. The Hybrid and EV spots are always right outside the most expensive stores. It's been a thing for at least a decade. At my last job (company closed last month) we did parking garage work. The EV spots were always the best spots in the garage. In hospitals, the DR's parking usually had more EV spots than the other areas of the garage.

However, pickup trucks and large SUV's are generally as expensive if not more so than many EV's. Not sure why they don't have dedicated truck spots? Probably because a lot of pickup truck owners own houses that are the same value as their truck.
