Make lots of money and work a lot, or make an average amount of money and not work a lot. 1

If you could work 40 hour weeks and make enough money to buy a house, nice car, fancy vacations, plenty for retirement and never really having to worry about money etc... or work 20 hour weeks and make enough to get by renting, still have some money for some more local travel and lots of time to do it, reliable pre-owned vehicle, feel financially stable but not wealthy or completely financially stress-free.
What would you choose?

I'd work the 20, but instead of travel I'd save and invest, and just donhobbies instead of travel

Currently doing the second one and it's perfect - - for now.
For a while I was doing 4x 10 hr days a week and really enjoyed it - I had the weekends, and Thursdays, but those extra two hours on my "on" days really had me on.
Now my schedule is super flexible because I'm freelance, and it's perfect for right now - I get by, but I want to be marginally more comfortable and not worry about 35 years down the road as much - so with the current spare time I have I'm trying to skill up so maybe this lifestyle can continue with better money.
I don't want to live to work tho - but I do want to be comfortable and be able to retire, so for me it's about balancing and reconciling those two things - whether its 4 day 40 hr week or 5 day 25 hour week.
I'm sick of renting though blegh - even if it's a yurt on a bunch of land, I want land damnit.

I've spent my whole life either struggling or just getting by. I'd go for the first one.

40 hours isn’t bad. I’d love to be able to afford a house on 40 hours.

I work like 60 hours a week and don't know what i'd do with more time for hobbies. I'm bad at free time.
I'd rather work 70 and not have to know how to cook or parent or be a faithful spouse.

i put in a straight 40 for a job i love that pays a living wage. i'm hardly living some luxurious lifestyle, but i have a lot more than a lot of people have. it's my second major career, and i've only been out of school for a couple of years. the money and nicer things will come. i'm overall satisfied with my life at this point.

Lately I've been working 32 hours, 4 days a week because of a small work shortage
It's not bad I like it

Depends on the job, but honestly I would be pretty torn if it was a job I enjoyed. I really like my current job, but on the other hand I also like free time. It's a tough choice, there are pros and cons to both. I kinda like working, especially when it's a job I enjoy.
I would probably pick the 20 purely to be able to spend more time with family, that's the one thing that would sway me in that direction.

20 hours to be mostly stable? I mean I worked 40 hours to be mostly stable, so there’s a lot of appeal to that tbh.

Work the 40 hour job, live like you are working the 20 hour job. Save and invest like a man possessed. Reap the rewards 20 years later.
