Two Held On Drug Charges
COVINGTON, Ky. (UPI) —John B. Spelz. 30, Covington, and Clark Moore, 22. Columbus, Ohio, are held under $10,000 bond pending court appearance Monday on federal charges concerning operation of a laboratory for illegal manufacture of DMT, and hallucinogenic drug. Also arrested Sunday by federal and local officers at a four-room modern laboratory here, which operated under the name of Southern Scientific Co., was Charles H. Reinking, 18, a University of Cincinnati freshman chemistry major. He was released on his own recognizance in the custody of his parents. An estimated $250,000 worth of DMT, as well as a large quantity of TNT and chemicals used for explosives, was confiscated along with a cache of weapons and ammunition. Federal agents said in a three week investigation they traced the drug here from Chicago, where Moore allegedly was seen buying chemicals. When the lab was raided, the officers found two of the suspects mixing about 30 gallons of DMT, described as "dangerous but not as potent as LSD." DMT is used for "mind-expanding psychedelic trips."

LSD Manufacturers Must Go To Prison
U. S. District Court Judge Mac Swinford sentenced two men to prison Tuesday on charges they conspired to manufacture for sale a hallucinogenic drug, akin to LSD. Sentenced to two years each after being found guilty by a federal court jury in a week long trial were Clark R. Moore, 24, now of Chicago. Ill., and John B. Spelz, 32, currently of Cincinnati. A third man on trial, Charles H. Reinking, 21. formerly of Cincinnati, was found innocent. Attorneys for Moore and Spelz filed an immediate appeal and they were released on $5000 bond each. The three men were arrested by federal narcotics agents In a raid on March 31, 1968 at the Southern Scientific Laboratory. 413 17th St . Covington. Agents had trailed Moore from Chicago. where he had allegedly used a fictitious drug firm to purchase chemicals. According to charges, Moore and Spelz were found in the lab mixing a vat of what was Identified as diethyltryptamine, a depressant or stimulant drug. Reinking was in a back room. He contended that he was hired as a cleanup man and did not know what was going on in the lab. Swinford sentenced Moore. who was found guilty on two counts, to consecutive terms of a year and a year and a day. Spelz was found guilty on four counts and sent-enced to concurrent two year terms.

Fugitive for 18 Years Captured
A Kentucky drug fugitive, whose 18-year flight was aided by a family member who declared him legally dead, was captured in Santa Cruz, the U.S. Marshals Service announced Friday, Two marshals, accompanied by local officers, raided the home of John Spelz on Thursday [February 15, 1990] and arrested him after a struggle. Spelz evaded his Kentucky prison term in 1972 on a drug conviction. During Spelz's arrest, federal officers seized a suspected mobile drug lab parked in front of his home and recovered $250,000 in cash. Spelz's brother, his only living relative, had him declared legally dead in 1985, said Deputy U.S. Marshal David Hiebert. But federal officers traced Spelz to Santa Cruz, where he was living under the alias Robert Parker.

8 days ago was the 30th anniversary of John Spelz being arrested after 18 years on the run. Here's a little rundown of the interesting parts of Spelz' life (that I know about) from the time he's arrested, to his death, that I made on my bump post. I suspect there are many other notable events before, after and in between.
- 1968: He becomes the victim of one of the earliest known DMT lab busts (reported as LSD at first).
- 1970: He's convicted.
- 1972: He goes on the run and changes his identity.
- 1985: He is declared LEGALLY DEAD.
- 1990: He's captured under the alias Robert Parker after 18 years.
- 1991: He's released.
- 2011: He dies.
Those are just the things I know about him. You can just imagine the other incredible and exciting things that happened in his life. Someone should work with his family on securing the rights to his story and then turning it into a film. At the very least, I hope one of his family members does a Google search for him, finds this post, and gives us more details into John Spelz' exciting life.

10th anniversary of the death of John B. Spelz today. If anyone is interested, I had a guy contact me through The Shroomery to give me more info on John. The man claimed he was a good friend on John, while he was under an assumed name. He said that John hung himself in his trailer. Not sure if this person was legit, since he stopped messaging me as quickly as he started, but that's what he said.

Damn, I'm just realizing that the private messages that the guy sent me are deleted now. He said that John Spelz hung himself in his trailer on this day in 2011. Sad if true. R.I.P.
