There is a lot of great music out there, so I often don't make recommendations -- recommendations are too limiting...
However, there is one album, that I keep turning to, and which I am constantly blown away by. It may be more of an older person's album, as it deals with mortality, death, disease, and medicine -- and I don't think I ever appreciated it as much as I do now, having survived all that I have in the past ten years -- but, nevertheless, it is one album that I would highly recommend.
I'm a big Lou Reed fan, and I have much of his work, but this one album stands out heads-and-tails above what has already been a truly superior career. I think it is because the poetic ruminations on this album were sparked by the death of two close friends of his, and you can really feel it in his words, music, and performance.
Anyway, the album is "Magic and Loss." I highly recommend it, and I don't often endorse things like this. So be there, or be square!

Only song I heard of his was "Perfect Day". It's one of my favorite songs.
Here's a link to: Magic and Loss

Will definitely check it out. Used to have lots of velvet underground stuff but haven't heard it much for a long time. Thanks for the recommendation Papaver.

I don't often go around recommending things, but I was drunk last night, and it did occurr to me, that this is an album which has really grown on my over the last 15 years that I've owned it. It's a very solid piece of work. In my opinion probably his best, but that is a person judgement based on my own tastes...

The album came out in '89 I believe. I first heard it in the early '90s, and I liked it then, but I've really grown especially fond of it over the years. It's definitely one of my personal desert island picks...
Lou Reed also did a re-interpretation of Edgar Allen Poes work on "The Raven" last year. It is also an excellent work, but not as important to me as "Magic and Loss." If you get "The Raven" be sure to get the 2 CD version, and not the 1 CD version, as it's missing a lot of good stuff...
